Depends on the Kid.

My son, when given a "time out" would occupy himself by singing, humming or just doing something stupid.

He got the spanking.

My daughter. She got upset when told to take the "time out."

Really, the only time I've ever laid a hand on my kids was when they were younger, and they would do something dangerous (such as going for a hot stove or playing with an electrical cord, etc)

Associate pain with danger at an early age and they will remember the consequences of their actions.

HOWEVER, spanking them without them CLEARLY understanding the reason teaches fear rather than respect for the parent.

IMO....some kids I see today really need an ass whooping. We got it when we were young, and we turned out fine.

And I'm sorry, but if my kid EVER said to my face "I hate you" or "You're an asshole." They're getting whacked.

My dad had a sneaky way of bringing about corporal punishment. He'd wait. We'd be siting on the couch watching TV (thinking we got away with something) and he'd come by and give us a whack.

We'd ask, "What was THAT for?"

And he'd say.....

"That shit you did LAST TUESDAY!"

I don't personally agree with it but there is a huge diff between kids who get a slap on his/hers bum as opposed to Tam's
example of a young girl shaking in the corner at the sight of a man with a belt.........Thats a terrible indictment on our society in my opinion.......

I dont think anything badly about parents who dont spank

but it worked for me

Tater I am going to agree to disagree with you here.....each child is a small individual. At university we had a prof who always quipped kids are baby goats please use the word children.
It stuck!

The world is screwed up because of greedy, war mongering individuals. Not some one off little female who teaches very young children... a job I love and feel honoured to be allowed to do. I have five golden rules in my class, time out and a golden chair. Positive behaviour and discipline is promoted and children taking responsibility for their actions. To put their brains into gear before they act or speak.

I accept there are various forms of parenting some work better than others in different situations.

My two played up one day in a store... did I hit them no, I rea acted as they had stomped my feet and threatened to lie down on the floor they were so shocked they fell silent and still.

By the way I had several job offers from Elem schools in the US as they liked how I was trained, thought and taught.

Well, I did it and it is done. Hitting kids with shoes and shit. No way, but hitting them yes. There were rules, and negotiating with somebody that can't pay rent. Nah, but you talking about like some sickness. Shoes belts were not required to get my point across. If they broke the rules, oh well.

They got hugs, and speeches... cuz kickin ass take energy. Nobody ever spanked my children but me. I was the only one there. I played with my kids, kissed them, hugged them. I do not understand the thought that if you spank a kid you do not love them.

I had a grandma like that, hell once she even stuck a fork in my arm for talking at the table.... older folks didn't play and what was society full of back then.....you guessed it DECENT PEOPLE..

These kids are the victoms of their environmetn. In todays society parents are working their butts off to have everything and give their kids everything. The 2 important things that seems to be put on the backburner is love and communication.

I had my son, joking around, say to me once, "If you ever hit me, I'm calling the cops."

I replied,"Call the coronor, because you'll be dead by the time the cops get here."



Mine acted up in the grocery a few weeks ago, (They're 11 and 13) I made them sit on the bagging shelf and hold hands.

Yes Tater, old people did not play. My grandmother would see you doing something and say, "Baby don't do that." She would continue doing what she was doing, and walk by maybe two more times, and repeat her statement soft same as before, then next thing you know... Your ass is cryin.

yep I grew up in the projects, and the one thing I learned NEVER NEVER NEVER, piss a BLACK MAMA OFF, they will beat you with extension cords,shoes or whatever else was within their reach... so alot of my friends had it worse off then me....

All I can say is thank goodness I grew up in England. Here if they did that they would be looking at a prison sentence and no access to children.

I fully agree with you on disipline--my daughter's are 15 and 20 both were given a swat on the behind or hand when doing wrong-they now are both well behaved young ladies-my oldest worked all through high school and they have respect for other's....How many kids I come across nowday's that I think could use a swat on the behind.....There is a difference in child abuse and teaching them right from wrong.....Do you know I had several friend's with children whom were never disiplined and the worst part is I just hated the thought of them coming over---because they were allowed to do just as they pleased in your own home......

Yep, I was a blck Momma, raised by a black Momma, and father... and I raised my kids with the black Momma mentality, with a softer approach, but I told them... What I say i will do for you, I will. What I say I will do to you I will. And yes, I got beat with an extension cord or two. Did they love me hell yeah they did and I knew it.

My mother told my sister, stop running past the stove it is hot. She kept doing it, I know she warned her four more times. Next thing I know she smacked my sister dead in the back with the spatuala.

I can't feel bad about my kids... I refused to. I always warned them before I struck. I was a single Mom with four kids, and three baby daddies. And they were not going to turn out like some of their friends. I just was not having it. Then Marcus came, and he was a mess. But I am proud of him too.
