what I find sad is I heard some stayed behind to ride out this monster of a storm simply because they did not have the financial capacity to afford the cost of evacuating.

Its a pity our government cannot assure lodgings for those of low income who they tell to evacuate the area.

the thought of evacuating and the expense of it, only to return to be homeless. Compile the prior knowledge of how government agencies and insurance companies took care of those victims of Katrina

I am quite certain when the death toll is tallied and if we are allowed to be known those that did not survive where all or a majority of them where of the low to middle class income bracket... my thoughts and available funds will be for these people.

How often I hear of the upper class crying in despair because their summer home is destroyed yet those who barely make a living and not having the ability to reside in a different area. these are the ones who are truly gonna suffer and will be the last to receive any substantial assistance to rebuild.

honestly I will admit I do not have enough insurance to replace all my possessions, nor the funds to reside in a motel for months at a time especially being displaced and unable to earn a paycheck.

Some of this in untrue. FEMA and TX have chartered 1,000s of buses to provide free transportation out of danger and to shelters where there are free meals and medical attention. The people who don't leave have no excuse. Shelters in San Antonio are set up for 10,000 people and buses have been running from the coast to SA since Thursday. They even have the means to accommodate pets. This is true throughout TX.

Yes I saw them loading buses with the low income ,the elderly and getting the sick out of the hospitals.I guess the ones who stayed wanted to. they were told there would be no help after a certain point.I would have left if I had to walk out.laugh

I heard up to 20,000 stayed behind on Galveston Island. Their seawall is only 17'. I'd be gone in a heartbeat.

About 30 of them were in a bar called the Poop Deck on the seawall of Galvinstone having a hurricane party. Also I saw a photo of low income persons being loaded into school bus for evacuation. Seems like Texas used all the transportation avialable for the evaucation.

People stay behind on evaucation notices for a number of reasons.
Elderly often because of animals and property they want to protect. Low income because maybe they don't have the funds or vehicle to make the trip. Some like those that are now floating in the Gulf of the Mexico.....from the Poop Deck....because they made a really dumb
decision and had to have one last drink.
