I met a young man last week who is living next door with his wife (a temporary situation while they sell their house) Since we share web design as a hobby, he came over for coffee a few days ago. During our conversation he became aware of my financial situation. Tonight he came over with 6 large bags of groceries, enough staples to last me 'till next spring.

I didn't know how to feel, a little embarrassed, touched, and fighting my pride. Angels in human form do exist.

Yes I have been there too when I when the children were small and I was on my own. No matter what I did couldn't make ends meet some days. But having been on the receiving end I am now a little better off and am on the giving end. Don't sweat it Leo. He might have been paying back some good karma too.

Life happens. Just when we think that things are fine, we end up on a dead-end street, or we turn right when we should have turned left. Despite the subject of this thread, I'm fine. There are people in third world countries who are literally starving to death as I write this; think about it for a moment. No matter how poor we think we are within Western society, people are dying for lack of food and the most basic medicines.

My internet cost alone could likely sustain a family in India....Africa for a month.

We have the recourses to feed the world, but we're to busy deciding which Plasma 42" TV we should buy.

We order pizza while infants are starving.

Oh Leo... I understand your dilemma, I have always had a difficult time accepting help from people, be it emotional, financial... I am always the strong one, the one people come to for advice, the one who helps out others. Until I had a friend say something really strange to me.

He accused me of being selfish! How could I possibly be selfish when I always give to others, when I´m there for everybody and don´t expect anything in return???

He asked me how I felt when I was able to do something nice for somebody else. Well the answer was obvious... I feel good.

His reply was... "Then why can´t you allow someone else to feel good by helping you?"

Leo, accept the gift with good grace knowing that you have committed an unselfish act in allowing someone to feel good because they could help.

Your story reminds me of a similar situation that happened to me quite a few years ago, when my daughter was a little girl.

It was around Christmas time & a coworker & I were talking about the holidays. I had the Scrooge attitude... "Bah humbug!", because my louse of an ex-husband wasn't paying his support. So, I really didn't have money to get my daughter any gifts. I nearly broke into tears talking to John about this.

Well, a few days later, John came into our office & handed out cards in envelopes. He told me, "My wife said you have to wait til you get home to open this."

After I got home, I quickly opened my card, to find a check for $150 in it! As I read through tear-stained eyes, she had written telling me how when she & John were younger & struggling, they had a "human angel" do the same thing for them & now that they were better off financially, had decided to pay it forward. That year, after John went home & told his wife about our conversation, they decided that I would be the one that year to receive their very kind & generous gift.

Let me tell you, that turned out to be one of my best & most memorable holidays EVER! And just sitting here, typing this & remembering, I'm nearly crying! There still are good people out there!! purple_heart

Paws, I have never met you in person but I know you are one of the kindest most giving person anyone could know. You would definetely do the same if you were able.
I have recently gotten out of a bad 2 year relationship. I am now homeless, but I don't worry about it. It has been 3 weeks today and I am not starving or freezing. There are angels taking care of me.
