Media: Bush Is The ‘Picture Of A Beaten Dog’»
In the wake of yesterday’s congressional meltdown over the bailout bill, President Bush gave a speech this morning, meant to reassure the public and the volatile financial markets. Just four minutes long, the address expressed disappointment in Congress and warned that “the consequences will grow worse each day if we do not act.”

Bush’s speech is unlikely to have much of an effect. Immediately following the address, MSNBC turned to New York Magazine’s John Heilemann, who commented:

I don’t think that comforts anybody. I don’t think that moves a single vote. With due respect and sympathy for the man, that was the picture of a beaten dog. That was the picture of presidential impotence right there. He looked terrible like his bell had been rung. He looked drawn to me.

The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan added, “It strikes me lately, when the President talks about the economic crisis, that he seems like a commentator upon the crisis as opposed to the leader in the crisis. There is the sense that he is watching it saying we need to do something, as opposed to we will do something.” Watch Bush’s speech, followed by MSNBC’s commentary.

As the Washington Post writes today, yesterday’s failed bailout vote “marked the biggest legislative defeat of Bush’s tenure and underscored the vanishing influence of a president who could once bend a pliant Congress to his will on wars, taxes, surveillance and a host of other high-profile initiatives.”

Coinciding with these developments, Gallup has released a new poll today showing that Bush’s approval rating has dropped to the lowest point in his tenure.

The Real ’Gay Bomb’ of the Iraq War
by Bryan Ochalla
Gaywired.com

Everyone has had a chuckle over the non-lethal "gay bomb" the U.S. Air Force considered adding to its arsenal in the early ’90s.

Although the weapon never made it out of the planning stages, a gay bomb of another sort has been exploding in Iraq since the U.S. military invaded the country in 2003, according to Ali Hili, a 34-year-old Iraqi exile now living in London.

"The U.S, and other allied forces are doing nothing to stop the massacres of any ordinary Iraqi, not to mention the homosexuals, the most unpopular portion of Iraqi society under the new evil regime," says Hali, who launched Iraqi LGBT in late 2005 "after hearing about the killing of so many of my friends" inside the war-torn country.

Hali describes Iraqi LGBT as a "secretive underground network" for the country’s LGBT community-especially effeminate men and anyone transgender. "We’re a fledgling group but have been paramount in helping Iraqis with safe houses, protection and underground communication," Hali explains.

Two of the group’s safe houses are set to close at the end of the month, however, due to a lack of funds. According to Hali, it costs about $1,800 each month to run just one of his safe houses, which covers gas, electricity, food, water and the salaries of two guards-essential to protecting the 10 to 12 people living within their walls.

Closing the safe houses wasn’t a decision Hali and his partner made lightly-especially considering such an act could well be a death sentence for some of the soon-to-be-homeless.

"Homosexuality was generally tolerated under Saddam," Hali says. "There certainly was no danger of gay people being assassinated in the street by police. Since his overthrow, the violent persecution of gays and lesbians is commonplace. Life in Iraq now is hell for all LGBT people; no one can be openly gay and alive."

Although the plight of Iraq’s LGBT community hasn’t been ignored completely in the U.S. and the rest of the world-in June, for instance, Reps. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Barney Frank (D- MA) called on U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to investigate reports of violent persecution of gay and lesbian Iraqis by Islamic groups and militias-Hali says LGBT Iraqis continue to be "the most unpopular portion of our society."

"Sometimes when I look at the news I feel so sad," he adds. The deaths of his LGBT compatriots "doesn’t matter to world. as if we don’t exist."

Hali hopes to change all that with Iraqi LGBT, though he admits he can’t do it alone. "We need donations to help fund the safe houses and to pay for food, clothing, electricity, police protection-even phone cards," he says. "Many people have nothing but the clothes on their backs, and sometimes not even that."

Why would anyone vote for McCain??? You would have to be insane, mental or stupid!

Haven't people learned their lesson by now? How can people be THIS stupid? You were fooled twice now... and now we are going for a THIRD time? I can't believe the polls are even close! It should be like 99% Obama, 1% McCain.

McCain is worse than Bush and Palin is a complete idiot, even dumber than Bush.

Why do people want more of the same (or worse)?

Do you really want an old man who is a total drama queen, constantly lies, cheats, has temper tantrums running our country? The stakes are too high!

McCain is obviously targeting the STUPID vote with all his recent tricks, lies and distractions and betting on the fact that there are enough fools out their to elect him.

I do think that Obama will win, but it will be close. Unless of course, the Republicans steal the election like last time.

Mukasey Appoints Special Prosecutor To Investigate U.S. Attorney Firings; Will McCain Follow Through?
After an 18-month investigation, the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility released a report today on the Bush administration’s controversial removal of nine U.S. attorneys in 2006. Though the report finds that three of the attorneys were fired for political reasons, “former attorney general Alberto R. Gonzales will not be referred to a federal grand jury for his role” in the firings.

Instead, the report recommends that Attorney General Michael Mukasey appoint a special prosecutor to “determine whether the evidence demonstrates that any criminal offense was committed” in any of the firings. In a statement today, Mukasey named Nora Dannehy, the acting U.S. attorney of Connecticut, as the special prosecutor:

The Report leaves some important questions unanswered and recommends that I appoint an attorney to assess the facts uncovered, to conduct further investigation as needed, and ultimately to determine whether any prosecutable offense was committed with regard to the removal of a U.S. Attorney or the testimony of any witness related to the U.S. Attorney removals.

Therefore, I have asked Nora Dannehy to exercise the authority of the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia for purposes of this matter. In that capacity, Ms. Dannehy will report to me through the Deputy Attorney General.

According to the Washington Post, Mukasey’s decision to appoint a special prosecutor ensures “that the politically charged issue will extend into the next administration.”

While Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has said in the past that he would support investigations into potential crimes by the Bush administration, McCain has hinted that he isn’t interested in reviewing Bush’s corruption. McCain’s top strategist, Steve Schmidt, has also previously dismissed the seriousness of the U.S. attorney scandal, calling it “a combination of nonsense and politics.”

Potential crimes described in IG report include lying to investigators, obstruction of justice and wire fraud. Will McCain pledge to continue the investigation?

Dude, just because Obama voted against the war as being immoral.
Does not mean that the war was conducted immorally...if war can be
ever conducted moral.....it cannot.

Obama singles vote is not a moral indictment of GWB or the war.

And we have seen how you do use the war for political and malious nonsense.

So I like that McCain is going to bring the men and women home with honor and in victory.....both of which Obama will not do. I like that my
country took down Sadam Hussien, a brutual dictator and his family and the Bathist party. I like the prospects of a Democratic Iraq changing the realities of the Persian Gulf region. I like much....but not all of what has been done here.

TT.......

Under Saddam these attacks were not there as they are existing today and have been existing after George W Raped the country and made a total anarchy out of it! My post refers just to one other horrible result of your beloved stupied war agaisnt Iraq TT!

Christians, Gays, Women, Jews, Intellectuals, Artists, Dancers, Singers and many other groups in the occupied country are suffering in Iraq as never before becuase of this stupied occupation of yours planned and endorsed by Odd personalities as George W. Bush ,John McCain, and Rice the Wampire and Cheney and Rumsfeldt and the rest of the criminals on charge !

Saddam was a horrible dicatator no doubt about that even your president had no right to go and invade his country and hang him and killing his sons and trying to steal the countries wealth any way.....But still there have never been so much murder and suppression against minorities in the occupied Iraq as it has been since the occupation 2003!

When law and order was gone and when anarchy was the one and only present given by GWB to the people of Iraq.... all minorities began to suffer as a very clear result of that bullshit your current administration calls "Freedom"!

Just imagine for a single minute TT... What would happen in your own country if police even made a real "strike" for a single week even??????

Not a thing you "think" right TT? Americans would be Patriotic and they would Behave and nothing would be looted and no body would be Raped and killed and tortured and no body would take personal revenge and people all would stand in lines and behaving like Angels and no museums and shops would be looted ..... right TT? conversing

This war cannot be won!!! We need to quit now. We should have quit years ago. This is not about saving face or declaring victory. We are loosing lives and our economy. It's time to stop now. We need a NEW administration... one that doesn't need to save face. One that will not keep this failed war going.
"A young man's life is not worth saving an old man's face" (not literally their face... their reputation is what is meant).

We should have never gone into this war in the first place.

Sadam Hussien was the BEST thing we had going. He didn't allow terrorists or extremists and he kept the country under control. Whoever the new leader is will be so much worse. This war has made things worse for us and worse for Iraq. NOBODY wins here, and nobody is going to win.

What Americans don't understand is... people in Islamic countries do NOT WANT our freedoms! They are happy to live the way they do. In fact, when many of them move to non-islamic countries, they expect the country they move to, to adjust to their laws and values.

There is no honor here or victory. We just need to bring them home now. McCain will keep them there for many more years, and will start more wars.

The only brutal dictators here are Bush and McCain.

A democratic Iraq is not possible. It doesn't go along with the religion. It will not work. America needs to stay out of other countries and spend the money here at home.

And I can see why. I'm even scared of Bush and McCain. They keep manufacturing and hyping these crisis, so that they take away our civil liberties... something they could never do unless there is a crisis. What's next? It makes me uneasy to think about what crisis they are going to create next.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0LvtQAQ6sc

Civil Liberties lost:
1) Wire tapping, surveilance system
2) secret prisons, torture. Bush can declare any person an "enemy combatant" for any reason or no reason at all, and can put you into solitary confinement. This is very dangerous power that no president of the USA should have, even if we could trust him.
4) Certain people in the media who speak up against Bush, are put on the "do not fly list", and are being targeted. Look at what happened at the Republican convention. Reporters were arrested just for being there...for doing their jobs.

Here are the 10 steps to closing down a society, and they are all happening:
