PeachesandRay: This is the way I feel. Shelia is a devout Baptist while I'm one of those sinning unbelievers. I respect her for her belief and even go to church with her.

I'm one of those seeing is believing types. All I know is what a book (written by man) and the clergy (men) say.

Besides, what kind of god allows his priests to molest children and let them get away with it?Earl

Before a christian is allowed to marry a muslim, they have to convert. It is more than just respecting your partner's religion, you have to denounce and forsake your own.

There are more religions/flavours of, that require this, is there not?

Or maybe all of them? I know that the Orthodox church require it, I think the Jews have a similar rule and maybe also the Catholics?

What happens if they simply marry civil?

My first wife was Catholic and no, religion had nothing to do with our breakup.

We had to do the marriage classes and such before we could get married. The priest was of the devout French belief. I was treated like a black marrying a white and I was told that I had no say in what religion my children would be brought up in.
When I mentioned how I wanted my kids to make their own decision in whether or not they wanted to go to church, I was given a sermon on how I would be depriving my children the beauty of the Catholic religion. I almost told him to put it somewhere but my ex wanted to get married in that church.

If I was smart back then, I never would've married her. laugh

I suppose there are others that require this, but i think it's hardly the same, to say, completely switch from Christ to Moh. and to convert from one christian denomination, to another. In my country, we have many other denominations, that don't require conversion, if both partners are christians.

My muslim ex, was the best boyfriend i ever had, and the one i was with the longest. We are still very good friends, go for meals when i visit, and i think it's some sort of punishement we met. frustrated

Like i said, when children are involved, it could culminate to trouble. Christ or Moh. for them? dunno

A civil marriage could be consider, but i think it would have to be with a more civilized than religious partner, for this to happen. laugh

Why is that?

That and those relatives that will make you miserable your entire life if you don't baptize your child to their faith. I don't have to worry too much about winding up like that since once someone starts to tell the "This IS how it's going to happen" I say something along the lines of "Wanna bet?". It'd be nice if marriages between different faiths would work every time, but why add more friction to your relationship? You should be allowed to pick your partner, hands down without anything being said from the heads of your religions, but you should also keep in mind things that will or will not happen because of the inter-faith marriage.

He would be envied by many ( even the goats would). laugh

Do you know that there are still people in this day, worried about what their fathers will say, if they marry people from the 'wrong' religion/tribe? I have one friend ( educated with a good job, living in europe), worried about this.
I couldn't comment on his dillema. laugh roll eyes

If a parent is going to control choices like these ones, then they might as well take care of the bills, as well. laugh

I guess so, yes. We did not get into this actual problem since I do not have someone saying how it should be. As for the rest; time will show, but I think more or less that a kid of ours would be more inclined towards the orthodox or non believer than to Buddhism, since the latter carry no faith as such, just culture hard to find around here.
