venere08: I can understand that. Once you get used to the subway, and it did take a while, it then becomes a breeze. Mind you, all walked most of the time, the length and breadth of Manhattan. At night, with all the lights of Broadway, I had to pinch myself as I looked around me. I was there.
And I felt so safe, even when returning back to the hotel at 1.30am on my own on the subway. It wasn't the Ritz, but it met my frugal needs, as I wasn't inside much. I stayed for a week with someone who was from Adelaide originally, she is there as a physical therapist. Only downside there were the noisy mexicans who partied all night. So one morning I blasted them with Gerschwin on really loudly when they were wanting to sleep the next day. Not a peep after that!

hahah... yep, it's magical!
but then again - from my point of view - every year around Christmas time (for many years till this year) I had 2 choices either take a vacation and get the h** out of there or have a break down with all the tourists and police lines around Rockefeller Plaza it was impossible to get to the subway after work and no one could even pick me up from work in a 2-3 blocks radius police would not let stop (not park!, just stop for a sec) a car.
But otherwise it's great!
