Road signs in Wales are all mainly bi-lingual, but....

When officials asked for the Welsh translation of a road sign, they thought the reply was what they needed.

Unfortunately, the e-mail response to Swansea council said in Welsh: "I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated".

So that was what went up under the English version which barred lorries from a road near a supermarket.

What I dont understand, is why didn't anyone notice
before the sign was made, delivered and erected?

Any Welsh speakers in here to confirm thats what
it actually says?

Whats even crazier is the fact that road signs
in Wales are in English and Welsh, at quite a
cost also.
The signs appear clutterd, confusing and
surely not needed. After all I'm certain there
isn't a single Welsh motorist who doesnt
speak English.
Obviously looking at this sign, many of them dont
even speak Welsh!!!

I do see your point Graham and one part of me (the practical part) agrees with you... the other side of me understands that when your language is outlawed it becomes a matter of pride to get it back.

Wales is a separate country to England with a living language we have the right to read and speak it . Roads sign help to keep the lanugage a live.

Well if they insist on it I think they need to
brush up on their translation somewhat.
There's another sign, apparently one of
many with misleading messages.
This one is next to a set of temporary traffic
lights.
When translated it reads

When red light shows stand here

My father traveled to Papua New Guinea and cmae back with some great stories about signs.

He said there was one like this:

"Bridge buggerup. No go."

Another:

"Draiv isi-isi. Bullmama on road."

And they call their own country Papua Niu Ghini.
