hearts do break
a slow unravel to reality
as first impressions fade and die
and beauty shows its warts and all
I saw you first
in all the glory of imagination
gold and glowing full of promised joys
until I let you closer and the image faltered
could I be such a fool again?
Of course,
My heart will seal its wounds
with platitudes
with silly words and dreams
and see another miracle approach
and I will hold the steel
to whet your knife
so you may carve
my unsuspecting throat.
