I think it has to do with emotion and thinking. Women talk about what they are feeling, men talk about what they are thinking. Emotion carries weight, so maybe if we are only using however many thousand words a day equally, us men feel the weight of the emotion behind what them women folk are saying and it feels like 3 times as many words to us.

The first one is more prone to nouns & adjectives (colorful speech), the second one--to verb (actions), which are definitely much less in numbers... :-)
