jbibiza: In 7th grade I purposely failed the exam for the "GATE" program... it´s hard enough to get accepted by your peers when your mother makes you wear dresses instead of jeans to school... never mind being separated into a special class for smart kids. The things I had to do to prove that I was "cool" and not a nerd or geek...

I had the problem of fitting in because I was always the new kid, being an AF brat. It took me YEARS to be accepted. But I must say... & this is unfortunately the truth... after I was noticed by the guys, I was accepted by the girls. Before that, I was made fun of because of my glasses, my clothes, my haircuts, etc.

But then, that's another thread in itself... how cruel kids can be...

I wasn´t an AF brat, but we moved every two years and I was always the new kid as well... I wouldn´t go through childhood again for anything... kids can indeed be cruel. High School was a whole other matter... I had boobs...laugh

sweetowen: I'm just wondering your opinion on this. Do you think people who are "better looking", "smarter", "wealthier", etc., get treated better or more advantages than others?

Hey!! Me too!! laugh tongue And my parents finally let me wear makeup..... I remember the first day of school in 10th grade. I sat in the "Junior section" for a pep rally, with a friend. I heard someone yell, "HEY YOU!" I looked up & these guys were looking down at me & asked if I was new. I said, "No". After the pep rally, they came up to my locker, shook my hand, & introduced themselves. After that, I was "in", so to speak. Ironic, huh? I guess that DOES have to do with this thread, now doesn't it?

I only got to skim through the first article. But it definitely was very interesting reading!

So, if there is a part of the brain that tells us whether a person is attractive or not, wouldn't it just prove that we base our attraction on looks? Can we just over-ride this?

I can't wait til we meet! It seems we'll have a lot to talk about.

I got my high school sweetheart through that group of guys I met that day! I also got better known in school & made it into some clubs, becoming an officer in some & nominated in others.

Oh, there is no doubt in my mind. I would remove the "smarter" option, though. But better looking and wealthier people definitely have the advantages in life. For the better looking....it's not who you know, it's who you blow. For the rich, it's not who you blow, it's who you know. In either case, it's about connections.

The strange thing was I never became part of any of the "cliques" but had one or two friends in all of them.

Here is another fun site. http://www.beautyanalysis.com/index2_mba.htm

There is a "mask" that you can put over your picture to see if you have the "perfect face," or how close you are to the perfect face. There is a mathematical formula for this. Even with humans, there is a geometrical formula for the perfect dimensions.

I think the initial attraction is based on looks, but we are also influenced by cultural norms. I think once you get to know someone, they may become more beautiful because you start to see the inner beauty more.

If that is the case, I need to start dating a much better class of women if I want to get anywhere in this world.

I do think intelligence gets you farther, but only when you get older. We all seem to be basing it on how we were accepted in school. But being smart as an adult does have it's perks. Yes, looks can help you land a job... but only to an extent. You still need the knowledge to get the job. I sure wouldn't want a doctor to operate on me just because he was cute! scold

In short yes. I was a "cool guy" in school, till we got to the age where sexuality and physical attractiveness mattered. Then i disappeared, and far as i can tell, i'm still gone. I still have friends, mostly female, because i'm......(sigh) so easy to talk to and such a great guy.

Then there is the snobbish attitude

When I was in Austin, a group of us decided to go for a dinner at a very popular restaurant, my friend, a Texan and the regional manager for Sheraton Hotels, phoned to book a table but was turned away, told it was booked up for some weeks, we decided to play a trick, so I phoned, put on my very best English accent and asked to book a table for 6 under the name of “The Earl of Worcester”. The booking was taken immediately.
