jbibiza: Exactly! Hence the reason for this thread... what is the motivation behind those choices... I don´t think it´s always what we think it is... I think there is a lot of subconscious things that go on in our choices that we may not realize.

It's true that in the end we always have a choice, even when it seems like we don't - though there are always consequences (good or bad) for them. In the end, make the choices that you feel are right. thumbs up

And here I thought this was going to be a thread about guys with toys not being able to commit in a relationship.dancing

If you like the present situation of baby sitting the black lab....hey go for it....I have had big dogs breeds for over 25 years. They will teach you love and trust and how to get the local dogs barking at 2 am. All that is required on your part....love and a sense of humor.

Each one you take, is one less that ends in a pounds....

Just be responsible.......adding 25 large dogs to your family.....is little much. Next Christmas....the cost of Chew toys will break you.

I love what you said about each dog you adopt being one less in the pound. I've rescued all of my animals over the years. And heck...adding two large dogs to my family has made the cost of chew toys expensive enough! If I had 25 large dogs, they'd have to be each other's chew toys 'cuz the cost of the food would break me! rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing Oh...and yes, they have taught me how to get the local dogs barking at 2 or 3 am! rolling on the floor laughing

Loved this!

jbibiza: Last week a friend dropped his dog off for me to take care of... a beautiful Black Lab by the name of Monty.

What can I say... I´m smitten! He´s laying here now, half on the couch, half on my lap lightly snoring in a most adorable fashion. I put his blanket on my bed at night and he sleeps next to me... in the mornings we wake up and wrestle around for a while and groan at each other.

I´m enjoying long walks on the beach everyday as I have company to do it with, going into town for a coffee is just a bit more enjoyable with him laying curled at my feet.

For the past few years I´ve avoided getting a dog because my life doesn´t seem stable enough to give one a secure life...

But maybe... making the decision to have a dog is actually a step that will insure I have a more stable lifestyle. Perhaps this attitude of keeping things in my life "minimalistic" is just a way of insuring that I can "drop and go" at any given time, rather than the freedom from materialism that I claim....

So... my question to you..."Is a life that rejects materialism, really just a way of avoiding commitment in life?"

Well having a dog is a commitment for many years...it's like having a child all over again...so it could be the commitment thing...but after raising children already it's understandable...you can still have a life and have a dog...you just have to make sure you take the time to devote to them....as they require the same love and devotion long-term that a child would...I have a dog...and she is like raising 5 toddlers all at once...but she also brings me just as much joy...she keeps me from getting lonely...and brings laughter into my life on a daily basis...not to mention she keeps me warm on those cold Canadian winter nights...wave wink dancing dog cheering cheering hug grin
