As a young child, my mom used to wash my hair in the kitchen sink. To this day, I still find it easier that way than in the shower. Doing it that way brings to mind my favorite blond joke (no offense to all you wonderful blonds out there):
Why do blonds wash their hair in the kitchen sink?

When visiting Grampa's house, it was customary to come in from the basement door... mostly because we would be coming off a long car ride and that's where we'd pull in the loaded car.
It was that cool face full of basement air that told me I was home. Well, that and the 2nd cabinet to the left where Gramma hid the preserved plums and seaweed paper. That was more precious than any candy bar.

That reminded me of when we'd go visit Grandma. Her place always smelled like Musk. That was the only perfume I remember Grandma wearing. After she passed away in 2004, my sister just HAD to go out & buy a bottle of Musk & wear it to be reminded of Grandma. Ironically, my aunt had passed away earlier that year & I remember her wearing White Diamonds. I'd always hug her & say, "Aunt Shirl, you smell sooo good!". I asked for & received a gift set of White Diamonds that Christmas. And I bought my sister her Musk. smitten wine

My grandmother kept games for us kids in the closet when we came to visit. We would sit with the closet door open playing games for hours and smelling moth balls that were in the closet.

I still like the smell of moth balls to this day.grin

Me too! cheers My aunt used to have them in her house. Another memory was each year, my mom, my grandma & my 2 aunts would get together & do canning. The one year, my aunt was due with my cousin. She went into labor during the canning & had to be taken to the hospital. My cousin is now 35 years old & that memory is still vivid in my mind.

I miss my mom & her family... they've all passed.

My grandmother always let me play in the jewelry in her jewelry box and her scarves. When she died, I recieved other things, but what I asked for was simply a scarf and scarf clip.

My Grandpa had a 'money rock'... a huge piece of granite next to the shed and a hammer with a mushroomed head just inside the door. First place young grandkids would go when we'd come to see him was out to that shed to get some money to go uptown for candy or soda.

Hours would be spent pounding on the rock and it would get frustrating; resulting in a bed of granite chips around the rock and mushroomed head on the old hammer.

He'd come around, distracting with a request for some help in the garden, stories and reminders not to pound on it too hard to break it; that money would only come out with a light tap and suggesting maybe it just needed a rest. It took several years to determine that a few coins would appear only when he came around. He was a subtle practical joker and I learned from him.

When I became 'Tampa up north' to my grandson, I told him about the money rock and got him to help me find and get rocks out of the woods... gave him a hammer and tried every one until we found one that would be productive ;-)

Needless to say, with his help I now have a collection of rocks around the place and he hasn't yet figured out the source of the coins. However, he usually doesn't have the longing for money until after we go into town and 'Tampa' only has enough money for lunch, then goes for the hammer when we return.

I have a feeling it won't be too much longer... he's at least as smart as I was at his age and is becoming a practical joker in his own right.

My grandparents were farmers.....was still very young when they passed away.....but still have this incredible memory of a house brimming with life....

innumerable cats that hiss at you if you try to touch them.......

pigeons flying free in the hatchery on the roof...

a fat goldfish colony in the water reservoir out back....

and most incredible of all......round the back of the farmhouse they had this huge orange groove.....they used to keep peacocks there.....

the greatest thrill was to hide among the trees quietly and wait.....until the male starts his mating dance to the female birds and spreads out the tail.....amazing, simply amazing...

memories that linger in my mind eye till today....

possibly also the reason I chose to come back here to live permanently from the mainland too.
