I talked with the foster dad a little while ago. Looks like the student is going to be in ICU at Shriner's for about 6 months. He has 2nd degree burns on his face & 3rd degree on the rest of his body. He didn't drop & roll, but ran, so the burns are all the way around. They have him on a morphine drip & other medications.

His biological dad & step mom were allowed to see him and his grandma stayed for a few days, but I think it's going to be his foster parents & the social worker who's going to be there the most.

Foster dad is going to post some pictures of the boy on the outside of the door so that nurses, doctors, whoever visits him will know what he looked like before the burns. I think we're going to be getting our students to do posters for him to hang around the room.

I think he's still sitting at a 50/50 chance of survival.

I remember when I was in junior high, some boy at a neighboring junior high stole a chunk of potassium metal from the science dept and PUT IT IN HIS POCKET... then he went outside, and it was raining that day... to this day, hardly any of the other kids figured out what the hell happened to him that day. Potassium metal + moisture = big purple fire

Doesn't sound too smart. What this kid did was a bad choice too, and he's going to have to live with it the rest of his life, but at least he's still here...

His social worker is going to put the principal on the visitors list so he'll be able to go down & see him.

How old is this boy? Where was he making this bonfire? This brings back memories of that tragedy that happened at Texas A&M a few years ago. When will people learn to respect fire? I assume the accelerant he was using was probably gasoline. Gasoline is far more dangerous than people realize, in fact if the automobile were invented today the gov would never approve it to be fueled with gasoline as it is way too dangerous a substance.
One more thought, 4 weeks will be the critical danger point as the liver usually gives out at around that time. If he's alive in 5 weeks he will probably survive. I hope he makes a complete recovery.

It's heart breaking to think of the suffering this child is going through.

A lot of good vibes and prayers for him.

hrt4lse: I never thought I would post one of these threads....I haven't been watching the news while I've been off from work.

The principal from one of our schools just called me to find out if I knew the student who recently got burned. Apparently he was lighting a bonfire (not sure where) and was using some type of accelerant that blew back at him. 85% of his body is burned and he's down at Shriners Hospital, his chances of making it are very slim.

Yes, I know the student. He's in foster care. He's only been with us since August. He's one of our Community Day School kids and was doing better behavior wise out in the smaller group.

Please, whatever you do, be it prayer...good thoughts...good vibes....whatever, please send them his way for whatever is meant to be. If not recovery, then at least to be allowed to go peacefully without pain. The kids from his class are also going to need some emotional support (so's the teacher).

all of u are in my thoughts and prayers teddybear hug
