Olsojente: Came across this and just thought I'd share...
it's from The Boston Globe..."My life in Gaza
By Mona El-Farra | July 10, 2006

THE IRONY IS almost beyond belief. Since the capture of an Israeli soldier on June 25, the Gaza Strip has been subjected to a large-scale military operation, what Israel calls ``Summer Rain." Because Israel bombed the power plant, and the area needs electricity to pump water, most of Gaza now has almost no access to drinking water. In the heat of summer, rain would be a blessing far more welcome than the ongoing bombings.

I am already starting to lose track of days and nights, of how many bombs have dropped. Since the main power plant was destroyed, we have had to live with no electricity. What we do get is patchy, and barely enough to recharge our mobile phones and our laptops so that we do not lose all touch with each other and with the outside world.

As a physician, I fear for our patients. Twenty-two hospitals have no electricity. They have to rely on generators, but the generators need fuel. We have enough fuel to last a few days at most, because the borders are sealed so no fuel can get in. The shortage of power threatens the lives of patients on life-support machines and children in intensive care, as well as renal dialysis patients and others. Hundreds of operations have been postponed. The pharmacies were already nearly empty because of Israeli border closures and the cutoff of international aid. What little supplies were left have gone bad in the absence of refrigeration.

Food too is spoiling without refrigeration, and food supplies are low. West Bank farmers threw away truckloads of spoiled fruit after sitting for days and then being denied Israeli permission to enter Gaza. Children grow hungry as we watch the food that could nourish them thrown into the garbage instead. More than 30,000 children suffer from malnutrition, and this number will increase as diarrhea spreads because of the limited supply of clean water and food contamination.

As a mother, I fear for the children. I see the effects of the relentless sonic booms and artillery shelling on my 13-year-old daughter. She is restless, panicked, and afraid to go out, yet frustrated because she can't see her friends. When Israeli fighter planes fly by day and night, the sound is terrifying. My daughter usually jumps into bed with me, shivering with fear. Then both of us end up crouching on the floor. My heart races, yet I try to pacify my daughter, to make her feel safe. But when the bombs sound, I flinch and scream. My daughter feels my fear and knows that we need to pacify each other. I am a doctor, a mature, middle-aged woman. But with the sonic booming, I become hysterical.

This aggression will leave psychological scars on the children for years to come. Instilling fear, anger and loss in them will not bring peace and security to Israelis.

Ostensibly, this bombing campaign started because of the soldier's capture. To the outside world it might seem like an easy decision for Palestinians: Let the soldier go, and the siege will end. Yet for Gazans, even in the face of this brutal violence, another decision comes, not with ease, but with resolve. He is one soldier who was captured in a military operation. Today, several hundred Palestinian children and women are locked in Israeli prisons. They deserve their freedom no less than he does. Their families mourn their absence no less than his family does. So while Gazans endure Israel's rainstorm, most want the soldier held -- not harmed -- until the women and children are released."cont.

I think that if you had 3000 Katyusha rockets fired at you in a year you might be a bit miffed. Also remember the reason there are fewer casualties in Israel is because the government takes appropriate measures such as bomb shelters to protect its population whereas Hamas site their rocket lanchers on top of schools, hospitals and built up areas, hoping and knowing that a large number of casualties among their people will help their cause, pretty cynical I think.
I don't actually believe Israel should exist but since most Israelis were born there and had no hand in the event that led to its creation I think they have a right to defend themselves. It inevitably makes bigger headlines when a major assault is launched by Israel rather than boring old 10 rockets everyday hitting your towns and cities, but people(and they are still people) in places like haifa live most of their lives underground. About 25% of the casualties in Gaza have been described by the UN as being civilian but almost all the victims in Israel have been civilian as Hamas has a wrtten and manifesto policy to target civilians.

None of our countries were created through peace, the American settlers tended to wipe out the natives yet nobody sayd they should all bugger off back wher they came from, because after a generation or two it just becomes aplace where people are born and live and don't know why bombs are falling on them. Israel will always exist because the Jews will always be comitted and organised. If 3000 rockets were fired from Cuba into Florida, there would be no Cuba left.

hi sweets.....will send them your way!!! to true, but it also worries me that the argument does tend to come down to personal attacks, and bragging and boasting who knows more on the subject, reminds me a bit of the 'small appendage syndrome' for some of the posts on here.............now have we got any solutions yet?

highfidelity: If you get your news from an American television network, no matter how horrible you think what’s happening in Gaza is the reality !! Its much, much, much worse.
See any French channel (has an english program as well!)
or the English-language Al-Jazeera channel, followed and received in the rest of the world, is unofficially banned in the US ...not a single cable or satellite provider carries it..
so far for free press.. Wake up !

And yet even with this imperfect coverage people all over the world, are protesting about what they are seeing. over a Million person demonstrations have been held, from Melbourne to Jakarta, from Calcutta to Istanbul, and from Vienna to London, not to mention the huge popular protests in Beirut, Cairo, Damascus, Amman, across the length and breadth of the West Bank, and in some of the largest protests ever held in Palestinian communities inside Israel.

Across the US, too, people have been protesting, writing letters to the editors of the newspapers, the internet has been a major source of information for all those millions who have figured out that they will never learn what they need to learn from the New York Times or the Washington Post or ABC or CNN ect. but you find (if you look for it ) that many others that have carried extraordinarily intelligent and detailed news by commentators whose sense of what is happening far exceeds to the mainstream press—including many superb pieces by Jewish that they are not accepting Israel’s violence.

thanks for the post ,,

well, thats hte problem actually , the whole world is being brain-washed , because they receive the news and info from specific channels , after being well filtered , to keep the image of israel clean , and to keep them look like a victim all the time . the media is the problem

RayfromUSA: When it comes down to it, it's ethnic cleansing on the part of Israel. By means of their invasions, massacres, and forced deplacement of the Palestinians into ever more untolerable conditions they are gobbling up all of Palestine.

Here's the proof.

Hey Ray,

Stop pulling a line out of context somewhere with just the words, "the usual justification of Israeli genocidal atrocities" and twisting it for whatever your agenda is. It is obviously not the beginning of a sentence and not even the end of a sentence. So don't go there with that one. You don't impress me with that at all. Put your talent elsewhere please!!

Get real!!!
The Palestinians don't have Katyusha rockets.
Hezbollah does, but they are nowhere near Gaza.

What Israel funnels to Hamas so they can shoot them harmlessly back into Israeli occupied territory are much much smaller, and much much less destructive than Katyusha rockets. And they have absolutely no guidance system whatsoever.
They are essentially just oversized bottle rockets.

There is no way in the world that katyusha rockets could be smuggled through the innumerable checkpoints surrounding Gaza.

Here's a picture of Katyusha rockets.

The “Intifada”

Living under such hardship and humiliation, in the year 2000 the Palestinian population began an uprising against Israeli rule called the “Intifada.” This term – rarely translated in the American media – is simply the Arabic word for uprising or rebellion – literally, it means “shaking off.” The American Revolutionary War, for example, would be called the American intifada against Britain.

This is the second such uprising. The first began in 1986 and ended in 1993 when the peace negotiations offered hopes of justice. (Sadly, in the following years these hopes were crushed after Israel, rather than withdrawing from the West Bank and Gaza, as promised, actually doubled its expansion in these areas.)

During this first uprising, which consisted largely of Palestinians throwing stones at Israeli troops (very few Palestinians had weapons), Palestinians were killed at a rate approximately 7-10 times that of Israelis.

One of the ways Israeli forces attempted to put down this rebellion was through the “break the bones” policy, implemented by Yitzhak Rabin, in which people who had been throwing stones – often youths – were held down and their arms broken. On the first day of this policy alone, one hospital in Gaza treated 200 People for fractures.1

Today’s uprising – termed the “Second Intifada” – was sparked when an Israeli general, Ariel Sharon, known for his slaughter of Palestinian civilians throughout his career, visited a Jerusalem holy site, accompanied by over a thousand armed Israeli soldiers. When some Palestinian youths threw stones, Israeli soldiers responded with live gunfire, killing 5 the first day, and 10 the second.

This uprising has now continued for over five years, as Israel periodically mounts massive invasions into Palestinian communities, using tanks, helicopter gunships, and F-16 fighter jets. Palestinian fighters resisting these forces possess rifles and homemade mortars and rockets. A minute fraction strap explosives onto their own bodies and attempt to deliver their bombs in person; often they kill only themselves.

While the large majority of Palestinians oppose suicide bombings, many feel that armed resistance has become necessary – much as Americans supported war after the attack at Pearl Harbor. Nevertheless, only a small portion take an active part in the resistance, despite the fact that virtually all support its aim: to create a nation free from foreign oppression.

Most Palestinians attempt – with greater or lesser success – to go on with their lives, raise their children, attend school, go to work, celebrate festivals, organize weddings, raise their crops, provide for their families – all the things that preoccupy people around the world.

As Israel constructs a wall around them, however, prevents them at checkpoints from traveling from town to town, destroys their crops, prevents children from traveling to schools and the sick and injured from getting to the hospitals, it is becoming increasingly difficult to live even an approximation of a normal life.
