Hi all,

An e-mail discussion recently ended suddenly, without any indication as to any objections, etc., but I am sure I know why.

I have been steadily employed for most of my life and still am. I support myself, my ex-to-be and still manage to have a little fun. Money's a bit tight (that is changing slowly), but I'm a capable, independent guy. And my future looks generally hopeful.

I am well-rounded, enjoying a wide variety of the arts, food & wine, museums, sports, and outdoor activities. I can carry an intelligent conversation about a variety of subjects... I think you get the picture.

But I commute by bicycle at least 95% of the time. I have no car. I live conveniently close to work, restaurants and shopping, and can walk or bike to just about everything I do. I chose this path quite intentionally:
<> Improve my character, fitness & health
<> Contribute to improving air quality in my city

This seems to be a conversation-killer (even when including the motives). I understand the perception of independence very well. I don't have to have a car to be independent. In fact, I'm not certain it's such a great idea to be so dependent on a car.

While I am not looking to re-marry tomorrow, I would like to meet a new lady friend. But how do I demonstrate that I deserve a fair chance? I'm pretty sure there are women in Charlotte who consider a resourceful, conscientious guy to be a good thing.

I don't need the ol' "there's someone out there for you" speech. I just want a fair chance at making a new friend - to be able to present myself as the resourceful guy.

dckerens,

You sound as if you live a unique lifestyle. Like you, I wouldn't even own a car if I didn't have to. With that said, for most of us a vehicle of some kind is a necessity to function in today's world. You are fortunate in that you can bike to and from work and shopping but I think I speak for most of us in saying biking and walking is not an option for most of us.

You might have a problem in finding and keeping your special lady concerning the dating process because she might not be too comfortable going to the movies or out to eat on the back of your bike. Of course you could always get a limo but they don't come cheap. Good Luck, Tommy
