Hi, as my profile says I live in Ashland VA and during the drought prior to huricane Isabel I rigged up a device to measure the water table in my area using an old abandoned well. Our well was just about out in fact wells were running dry all over the state. At that time I set my indicator at 0. After Isabel passed through, my indicator read over 6 feet. In the ensuing years the level has fluctuated from 6" to about 3 feet in height.
The water table is located up to about 30 feet below ground and in some locales it may even break ground. This is called an artesian well or spring. The height of the water table varies depending on rainfall, snowfall, season of the year (August is the driest month in VA) and other factors.
Well, the indicator right now is sitting right at 1" meaning if it drops another inch my well pump starts sucking air. Think of me as the canary in the coal mine. If you don't know what that means, ask somebody.
Bottom line? conserve water or you may just find that your well is empty and you wont be able to wash clothes, dishes, take showers or probably worst of all, flush toilets.
I'll post some water conservation tips if you want. Some of them are drastic.
I will be over within the week with bottles of water and will personally fill your well.
