Abortion clinics are to be allowed to advertise on television and radio for the first time.
Condom manufacturers will also be permitted to broadcast advertisements at any time of the day or night.
At present they are banned from advertising before the 9pm watershed except on Channel 4, where the cut-off is 7.30pm.
The proposals by the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) will give Britain among the world's most liberal broadcasting regimes on sexual health services.
The watchdog claims it is responding to Government calls for action to combat rising teenage pregnancy.
But its plans were furiously condemned last night by family campaigners and MPs.
They said television adverts for abortion clinics and condoms will lead to greater promiscuity among young people.
Dr Peter Saunders, of the Christian Medical Fellowship, said: 'The problem is that the Government strategy on teenage pregnancy, based on condoms, the morning-after pill and abortion, has failed.
'Allowing the advertising of abortion services is not dealing with the real problem. This is the approach of having the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff to deal with the casualties.

Am really unsure about it. I have very young children and the 4 yr old is at that stage where she questions what she sees ( as they do!). I guess it would depend how the advert is made. If it's going to be something that captures her attention, then I'll have to deal with it. But hopefully it'll be made in such a way that it'll slip under her radar.

I do agree that young people should be made more aware of the consequences of having unprotected sex...personally I think just watching a woman in labour for 15+ hours would be enough!!

rolling on the floor laughing yeah, me too grin

Its being said on Sky that they will be sensitive and provide other talking points too - I just read that theres an increase of 14 yr olds having abortions which is pretty alarming - Im sitting on the fence with this one, women have a right to say what happens with their own bodies of course but will there be adequate provision for the young women who have to live with the aftermath of these docisions - tricky subject methinks.........

The problem arises when young girls will think that they can use abortion as a form of contraception. The same thinking applies to the Morning After pill (which also this week is now available in some parts by text and/or over the counter) How is that going to be monitored?! Who's to say that the same girl isn't going to be back and forth to the same chemist every week?

I also think the boys should be taking more responsibility, so it would be nice to see that focussed on a bit more. It takes two to tango....as it were doh

Sometimes politicians are like monkeys on a success tree the most popular monkeys get to be higher up and the least successful on the lower branches that's us the majority the top monkeys look down and all they see are smiling faces ............
and all we can see when we look up are arseholes

The system as made it easy get pregnant have a kid and we will give you a house and keep you for the rest of your lives should we really blame the young?
If the parents were held responsible for their children there would be less kids having kids in the first place.
Information is a good thing whichever media you use to get it into the public's eyes but how many youngsters watch T.V they're all listening to music doing drugs playing on games systems or having sex sorry forgot drinkinghelp

Parents hands are pretty much tied as far as having any control on the kids goes - you only have to say boo to them at the moment and they are phoning childline......

A whole substrata of society is rising on this thing of kids having kids, its all very victorian and I cant help but wonder where all this progress we are supposed to have got is hiding itself very mad
