Are these as dangerous as we are led to believe or are the negative points highlighted more than the positive ones? We seem to hear so much about people having these operations, then dying shortly after, but not so much about the people who have had them and are still alive ...doh

I'm totally against this procedure thumbs down

I've known people that have had this done and then developed other health problems afterwards as a direct result from the operation. Also, I was visiting someone in hospital once and the lady in the next bed who had just had a gastric bypass suddenly had an heart attack and died
uh oh

As you say there's bound to be some success stories, just that we don't hear much of them.

Maybe someone will post on here with a success story and enlighten us beer

I suppose a person weighing 25 stone can also suddenly have a heart attack too. Also other problems related to weight as well. A bypass often cures diabetes as well.

IMO Gastric band operations should only be carried out strictly for medical reasons via the NHS for people who need it due to glandular and other serious medical problems beyond their control.

BUT - If the operation is needed due to lack of self-discipline in refusal to stop stuffing themselves with the wrong foods and drinking excessively etc to the point of danger to their health they should be forced to either pay the NHS for it or go private and not expect the tax payer to fund it.
Simple as that.

Its curious that the originator should disappear

You mention lack of self-discipline etc. The problem is junk food is addictive. McDs even put sugar in their buns for the burgers. Sugar is addictive. Morbidly obese people aren't stupid. Just because they have an addiction to extra calories, they are not stupid or ignorant etc. The fat doesn't affect their brains and they know full well they are slowly setting themselves up for problems, yet they cannot stop their addiction. Surgery is the answer, but so is, I think, psychological counselling, and tuition in how to shop and cook. Look at the junk people put in their baskets in shops such as Netto. Junk is cheap. A pack of biscuits for 20p. Cut those people some slack, as there is more to it than sheer gluttony.

Well, obviously gluttony and lack of self discipline seemed to run in the family of the woman I witnessed have the heart attack.

The two daughters in their early 20s were of similar size and also on the list to have it done. Some people just seem to see it as an easy fix to loose weight without them having to bother to eat sensibly, exercise etc.

It is certainly NOT an easy option. It is only done as a last resort and affects a persons eating habits for the rest of their lives. One of the advantages is that it can cure diabetes, both types 2 and sometimes type 1.
