The mayor should be the best person for the job - with these being important jobs.

I don't care if they're English or Scottish, or Polish, or Outer Mongolian, or Martian or whatever.

Sadly, with elected mayors it's not neccessarily the best person who gets the job. It's the person with the best public image who gets the job - which is usually the best looking candidate from one of the 3 main political parties.
And with appointed mayors it tends to be who was at the right place at the right time with the right image amongst the selectors.



Has anyone noticed that every General Election for the last 30 years has been one by the party (Labour or Conservative) with the more physically attractive Party Leader?

On that basis Gordon Brown would lose an election against David Cameron.
