Perspicacious: Assisted Suicide and Voluntary Euthanasia, there is a very thin line between the two, and when does voluntary become compulsory.
Here is what I think and it is based on experience of watching intelligent sound of mind people die in extreme agony all because of an undemocratically made law in the UK.
1. Any person with a terminal condition who concsiouly requests it should have the legal right to take their own life in the UK - That in my book would be the simple non academic non religious definition of VE
2,. Assisted - Any person with a terminal condition wishing to end their life when under extreme pain also has the right to sign a declaration exonerating medics from prosecution under those circumstances in the UK and anyone assisting them as a companion/helper to go to another country where it IS legal should not be prosecuted on return to the UK either.
3. Compulsory - If Brown the Stalinist Dictator gets re-elected I have no doubt that someone in his cabinet will suggest it as it is here already by the back door anyway in denial of potentially life extending drugs and retardents for Altzheimers disease not being given clearence by NICE and cancer drugs available only within the post code lottery or in Scotland whwrevthey have more compassion and sense.
Thos are my considered opinions.
They are why I have said for years that if we are an alleged democracy WE MUST HAVE and are entitled to A REFERENDUM - Switzerland solved it and we should be allowed to go there with no fear of prosecution for those who help the person wishing to die with dignity.
