how the heck does this keep happening - anybody any theories?

By Tim Castle

LONDON (Reuters) - A missing Ministry of Defence computer drive could contain details of as many as 1.7 million people who had shown interest in joining the armed forces.

The drive, reported missing last Wednesday by IT contractor EDS, was used with a recruitment system.

Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth said on Monday that "in the worst case" the drive could hold details of 1.7 million people.

For casual inquirers this would be no more than their name and contact details.

"But for those who applied to join the forces, more extensive personal data may be held," Ainsworth said in a written statement to parliament.

In some cases this would include data such as bank details, passport, National Insurance and National Health Service numbers, driver's licence information and details of next of kin.

Ainsworth said EDS believed it unlikely the data was encrypted, as the drive had been held in a secure area at its premises in Hook, Hampshire.

He said banks had been informed so they could monitor accounts for unauthorised access. Continued...

The MoD had also set up a helpline for those afraid they may be affected.

The loss came to light after EDS conducted an audit of its data-handling procedures to comply with new government guidelines brought in after details of 25 million child benefit claimants were lost by the Revenue and Customs department.

The Liberal Democrats said the latest loss was a scandal.

"This information is a potential goldmine for organised crime and could even compromise national security," said LibDem Shadow Defence Secretary Nick Harvey.

Last month, the MoD said two computer drives containing Royal Air Force personnel data had been stolen from a secure facility in Gloucestershire.

In July, the government said 747 laptops had been stolen or lost from the MoD in the last four years and only 32 had been recovered.

Trish,
This is the truth and is followed by a true story.
Before my late wife retired she worked for the Gestapo (DSS) for 38 years and always toe'd the official Civil Service line. She was a CO then EO but reverted to being a Specialist management typist doing highly confidential work that she could not even discuss with me. I am way up higher than section 2 of the official secrets list anyway through my contacts and trade - (See occupation on Profiel)

Four years prior to retirement all the personell based at the Ramsgate and Broadstairs offices (Well over 200) were interviewed for their own jobs by the private company who were set to take over vary confidential details of all claimants. B Liars's NEW labour Know alls implemented it after it had been set up by the arrogant Major's Tory turds previous to 1997

There was s very serious breach at central records which invlved both local offices holding at least 100,000 confidential client and family details within 4 months when they went AWOL

The CPSA and Management predicted it would happen if the private firm took over but it was hidden from all but a few outsiders then.

Brown and B liar and their incopetent prats at the top must therefore take ALL blame for what wnet on then and is STILL happening now, and for not making sure it all went back into proper hands where national security and confidentality are critical. The private cultur is too unbusiness like and far too casual, but I cannot see the Lib Dem happy clappy poofs and morons club or Cameron's crew of equally arrogant Oxbridge parasites doing it.

I've a theory....internal sqaubbles with in white-hall and they are trying to discredit each others depts. So one department plants a spy or compromises someone from a rival department and steals the laptop holding the data.

Once they have the information they want, they simply leave the stolen laptop in a public place for joe bloggs to kind it.

Now joe grew up in an inner city council estate and didn't have a good education. So the information was fairly safe (joe couldn't figure out the pass word)...But his gut reaction was he was on to an earner... So he phones the editor of some tabloid and sells his story.. The two of them cut a deal...Joe gets a couple of quid and signs a paper to keep quiet about every thing until the paper hits the street.

Then the Armani suit brigade with the dark glasses go to fleet street and take back the laptop.
dunno

Now if you a concerned about the informtion held about people and 'big bro'...thats another ball game...

Here's another theoretical

The spooks get Force 4 Security to collect the goods for fear of being identified by a veil wearing old Muslim woman carrying a bomb and in case they were featured in the next treasury cuts, because the polly's have vested interests in seeing our stuff goes AWOL anyway to act as a smoke screen for screening involvement in the Bankers activities and covert arms deals with Iran and the Taliban which gives our soldiers something to do instead of polish their kit laugh laugh

Great theories you two - I actually agree with lots of what you both say laugh wave

the very thought of the amount of information which will be available for 'losing' when they bring in the ID cards is enough to make the mind boggle.......... conversing wow uh oh

I think you said your degree is in aviation engineering didnt you? I would imagine your thesis was something to do with fighter planes or something like that tongue

But the whole point of doing such a course Mike is to hear what other people are saying, to find out the current and historical theories, you dont have to agree with them - its also not to tell them they are a bunch of tossers laugh

I have just done 4 yrs of psychology (social & developmental, health and interpersonal), sociology, criminology, education policy, theories of everyday life and more........ in all of these disciplines we went from the history to the current theories in stages over all the terms - you can stand outside and say its a load of crap but that doesnt mean anything to me at all for if you havent studied these disciplines and your mind is already made up that they are rubbish then theres not much i can do open such a mind, a student has to be a willing participant at the end of the day..........

Cheers Mike anyway and I'll make a toast to you later on when the sun's over the yard arm laugh wine

I wonder who said that I have a degree in aviation engineering - I have never said or implied it and my profile does say that either - scold Must be the dyslexia or the sight pills ain't workin laugh

What I said is that I am sufficiently educated in my trades to be accepted for a degree course in HISTORY - OR if were desperate - Social sciences. rolling on the floor laughing

Facts are that I have never needed one to do what I have all my life since the RAF saw to it we were HANDS ON and so other courses and qualifications I hold have enhanced the originals, and my abilities without the need.

I have worked at all levels including senior management (Chief development engineer) for a time ran my own mechanical/precison engineering business and still do consultancy work and aircraft restoration, all, based on my integrity and reputation.
