lint874: Having children is the nearest we get to earthly immortality.

Creating a new person that is genetically half you and half the person you've fallen in love with.

Raising a person that will be deeply influenced by you. That will copy and immitate you. That will adopt a lot of your habits, views and personality traits.

A kid just like me, now that's a scary thought. rolling on the floor laughing

The auestion anglo wasked was ..."why do people choose to have kids". She already ruled out accidents and planning out of love.

People generally choose to have kids to keep the blood line going..bit like royal familes or dynasties...it aint rocket science

Maybe it is.

This isn't a lot of response as to Why people want kids.

So far we've had:

Continuing a blood line
A sense of immortality
All consuming desire

These are great reasons. I wonder if noting why people choose NOT to have kids would generate even more responses.

According to a calculator at Bankrate.com, it will cost you $190,000 to raise a child to age 18. Times that by the number of kids you have and that could give you a big reason not to have children. I suppose some might have them so that they have someone to take care of them in their old age, but with our mobile society, I doubt that is a really good reason anymore.

Hi Teresa, how are you today? wave

Hi there Karen,

Im doing great. How are you?

That $190,000 is probably only for basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. It doesn't include all the extras.

I stayed home from work because I'm sick. I think I got the bug from the conference.

Yes, I believe the $190,000 are basis expenses. Can you imagine if you have a large family?

The pill is not 100% effective, and we know how much men hate condoms. In fact, certain cold medications can make the pill non-effective. Sure there are other ways, but they are less effective than the pill. You have probably been real luckly so far.

Now that they are making them in a variety of sizes, it really shouldn't be an issue anymore for the guy to keep it wrapped. If HE doesn't want kids, then HE better keep it wrapped.

Food and clothing comes to less than $50,000.

Shelter? Surely that depends whether you buy or rent your property?

If you buy your property, you'll have an asset that will go up in value over a period of 21 years.

A lot of costs are childcare and education - with a big chunk at the end for university costs. What, so nobody's children contribute to their University costs???

And don't you get tax rebates / some form of child benefit in the USA, like we do in the UK?

Sure you can spend over $190,000 on your children.

Or you can do it the more economical way for less than $40,000.

Maybe I should start a separate thread explaining how to do it?

They do break. I guess careful is the key word, and the right size of condom.
