Seabiscuit: Lets have some honesty.. How many of the Utd fans here have been to see a game at Old Trafford?
I started going to football matches in the fifties.
My dad and my sister used to drag me down to
Maine Road, they were avid blues.
This was in the days of flat caps and rattles...
I hated it. They even took a large block of wood
for me to stand on, plonk me at the front by the
small concrete wall that surrounded the pitch,
then sod off up the terraces and leave me there.
I grew to hate Maine Road, Bert Trautmann, Dave
Ewing and meat pies.
Anyway, many years later, around 1967, a few of
my classmates were going to an evening match
at OLd Trafford, I think they were playing Everton.
As I had not been to a match for so many years I
decided to join them, I had no real allegiances in
those days.
So that was it...I saw the light. The Stretford End
became my spiritual home. Georgie Best, Bobby
Charlton and of course Denis Law became my
hero's.
I went to almost evey match that season, home
away, culminating with us clinching the title with
a 6-1 win at Upton Park. And then on of course
to that magnificent May evening at Wembley in
1968.
Manchester United 4 Benfica 1
Champions of Europe ten years after Munich.
I have a lot to thank my classmates for, thats for sure.
