I don't post to too many threads...haven't been here very long but this one definately caught my eye!

My Only Brother spent seven months in Afghanistan. I spent the entire time waiting for his phone calls with the t.v. tuned to CNN, CTV, CBC, whatever news I could get my hands on. Many days were spent panicked, many nights in tears. When His plane landed and his was back on Canadian soil I swore to him that if he tried to go back again I would order a hit on his a$$. Have his legs busted something. He kept telling he wants to go back.Stills drives me crazy but after a short story he told me one night about a month ago I finally understood.

Some of you may remember the young Edmonton soldier who suffered severe lower body injuries in a suicide attack in Khandahar. By brother was in the lead truck on that particular convoy. He watched as the bomber came out of nowhere, saw the explosion and also saw a man on a bike coming from the market vaporize in front of him. My brother's words.. That guy had just went to hte market and bought a chicken to take home for his family and some asshole blew him up. His family lost a father for what? That's why I'm going back.Somebody has to help these people fight for a better life.

He also told me that I'm not allowed to watch the news when he goes back. He will send me what I need to know and it will be the truth.

I know everyone either has no opinion on this or else a very strong one. Mine is mixed.... I don't wish my brother or anyone else's brother sister mother father friend to be in a place like that.. But I will support them no matter what. I will also cry for them, laugh with them, and pray for them.

Your brother is a hero.

As are the other soliders who are there. ( and those who have died there.)

Freedom is something we take for granted here in North America. I am glad Canada is helping in bringing stabiity to Afganistan. Our soldiers are making a difference and that is why Canada is seen as such a strong peace seeking nation.

Thanks Pucks! He is a hero...always has been. And although I don't always agree with what our government and others do, I will support anyone who stands up for what they believe in. The men and women of our armed forces also have mixed emotions and opinions, however they conduct themselves accordingly and with grace and integrity. Many people have a habit of forming their ideas on misinformation or no information at all. I'll stop here because I could keep going on and on ...... and on. But for the grace of god (and/or whoever) I was born CANADIAN!

Get your facts straight...so you know S. Harper did not send our troops to war. The previous Liberal government put our troops in Afganistan.
The only thing that seems to have changed of late is the mission has have become more bloody with combat and less focus on peacepeaking and rebuilding the nation. But how can you peace keep and rebuild if The Taliban and insurgents keep responding.

Fighting for peace is like f*cking for virginity frustrated

Someone said after WW2: never a german soldier should put his foot on forign ground! Now they are the leaders in Afganistan ... war is nowerdays called "peacekeeping"

Only where they send NO soldiers ... there is a chance for peace ... with a part of the money spend on millitary operations ... they had easily fed all the people and those would stop fighting too!!

Too bad the american president owns the weapon industry ... how to sell guns without war?

War doesn't know heros ... on war there is nothing heroic at all!!!
That is just cheap propaganda ... war is simply an insane bloody mess!!
I never have talked to a soldier of ww2 who said something about 'honor'.

So you're saying these men who died to stand against Hitler aren't worthy of credit, distinction, or to be held in high esteem?

I won't oppose you views on war, but to dismiss these men as anything less than heroes or honourable is disgraceful. You should be ashamed.

right....let's all feed the Taliban and with appetites sated they will all raise a glass and lay down their arms...

Would that it were that easy, spidermoose.

Witness - as but one small example - the unrest in Somalia in the early 90's: corrupt warlords battling for power and seizing humanitarian aid food shipments under the noses of the UN.

It is a simple fact that military intervention will always be needed to assist those that cannot defend themselves from corrupt and unjust regimes.

but the word 'hero' is allways used in context with "soldiers",
the resistens in germany comes to close to what we call "terrorists" today ... they who deserve the honor don't get em!

If the countries they send soldiers now to stop the war might better of stop to sell weapons to them ... the american gouvernment is the biggest arms dealer in the world ... and now those poor guys who die on both sides are paying someone else bill!

The german resistans was fighting THEIR OWN gouvernment because it brought war all over the world ... that's a big differents

No, it's not always used in context with any group in my opinion. I'll agree the word is tossed around lightly at times, like calling a sports figure a hero, but in context of all the men and women who died to defend our Nation, and others, they are certainly due the respect and the title of hero.

I won't argue that there are many heroes who go unrecognized while others are almost deified for no legitimate reason, but when speaking of Canadian soldiers in the context of WWII as you mentioned anything short of the word hero rubs me the wrong way to say the least.

Start a thread recogninzing who you think is heroic and ask others for their suggestions as well if you so choose but please don't dismiss the heroism or honour of these men and women based on something else.

I guess that's my .02, maybe even nickels' worth.
