Is it just me or is something WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out of whack here..............................come on people, this is beyond sick.

SANAA (Reuters) - A Yemeni court ordered the marriage of an eight-year-old girl terminated on Tuesday because she had not reached puberty.

The court also ordered the child's family to pay about $250 in compensation to the 30-year-old ex-husband.

The girl's lawyer and human rights activist Shatha Nasser said the minor had filed a suit in April asking for divorce and told the court that her husband had been physically abusing her and forcing her to have "sex with him after hitting her."

One of the people attending the trial volunteered to pay the compensation, the lawyer said, but did not explain the reason why the court ordered the compensation.

The ruling terminated the marriage instead of granting a divorce to prevent the husband from seeking to reinstate the marriage, according to the lawyer.

Many minor girls in Arab countries that observe tribal traditions are married to older husbands but not before puberty. Such marriages are also driven by poverty in countries like Yemen, one of the poorest countries outside Africa.

The husband shouldn't get one red cent. There are a lot of this happening in that part of the world. Lots of those girls are kidnapped from their family also, and asking the gir;s family to pay bethrotal prices.

I agree with you that something is way out of wack. What I fail to understand is how so called intelligent and/or religious judges, leaders agree, or let happen this child abuse. And worse make the girl or her family pay compensation.

Ok ......forget about where this is happening for a minute or about and beliefs, those are secondary in any case to a point.
The biggest problem here is that a grown 'man?'(30 yrs old) wanted to,thought of ,accepted or even conceived of the idea of being with an 8 yr oldbarfing
Then there's the parents who sold her to himvery mad (no, I will not accept poverty as an excuse or explanation.....how many of you would sell ur children?)
Then we have the fact that someone, somewhere actually performed the weddingconfused Don't tell me they didn't notice the age of the 'couple'
Then when it's denounced the 'husband' gets damages for the loss of his 'bride'(I may just start drinking again) and a 'warning'?????????
Doesn't the so called justice system have prisons or hell holes for people like this??????? A nice rope?,a dungeon? an ant hill?just throwing ideas out here.
And finally..no I don't want to here the ever present it's accepted there, because,no Islam does not condone this in the least, the are many misinformed people but Islam does not condone, accept or encourage this so please don't say it does TY

I just can't believe that people can be so sick and just get away with it.
Makes my head hurt.

As most people that have read a great deal of what I wrote knows, I plan to joke around a great deal of the time. However after reading Jens post, this subject has brought up different emotions in me that I'd like to share. To start with, if what I wrote offends you, I apologize in advance, it's never my interntion to openly offend anyone, this is just how I feel on this subject.
I very stongly believe that 8 years old is by far way to damn young to get married, and I think her "husband" should consider seeking some professional help.
However as for MysticalUnicorns statement, "Even back when say 12-13 year old girls were getting married it's disturbing, they're KIDS". I discount that statement for the simple reason is, in our society we are dictated by our governments as to how we MUST live our lives. Who are we to say what's wrong, or what's morally unacceptable ? These days there are a great deal of 12-13 (and unforunately some even younger) girls out getting pregnant, and who do they hang out to dry ? the guy that got her pregnant, that's who. Well it takes two to tango. I believe that if a girl 12-13 (according to MysticalUnicorn) years of age feels she is old and mature enough to have sex, then gets pregnant, then I say, screw the damn governments, if she's old enough to play, then she's old enough to pay, and drag her ass down the isle. We are virtually conditioned to think what's morally acceptable, and what's not. Who is to say what they did years ago (young ones getting married, or like in the days of the "old west", people carrying guns) is wrong. I hope like hell I never become so bigoted because of the conditioning by the Canadian government that I start passing judgements on how someone wishes to live their life.

Hi peeps....been a while...have been busy up to my eyeballs and beyond and now I'm getting ready to move in 2 weeks...lots to do....haven't forgotten any of you but hope you understand.

It's true that throughout the ages society has considered marriage acceptable at different ages.Ay on period of time an unwed 15 yr old was practically an old maid.Times change as life expectancy does
Personally anyone under the age of 20 should not get married(ducking to avoid thrown tomatoes)and I will go so far as to totally polically incorrect as to say phooey to what comes under 'cultural or religious beliefs'....Any one heard of freaking common sense?
Sadly in today's world kids are constantly exposed to sexuality,be it fashion, music,tv or otherwise, they r led to believe that they must follow the flock as many have in the past, only this time the flock is headed to the wolf's den.
I'm sick of hearing about and seeing teens(under 18) dressing like 'hoochie mommas' and trying to sell themselves off. They may be physically equipped to do the deed but mentally most aren't ,they don't think beyond the moment.
It saddens me to see 12 and 13 yr olds with kids of their own,we know that it's their parents who have the added on responsabilities.....the kids can't get work, they need to finish school if they hope for any kind of future.
Yes it takes two to tango and I know of many cases where the girls are the instigators but how can an adult ,male or female, think it's right to be involved with a child????????
Like Brew said, the guy need help and the parents of the girl deserve to lose any kids they have in their care JMO.
What a strange world we live in.
