Jake and the Kid.
The story takes place in Crocus, Saskatchewan.
There are two main characters in this story. Jake, the hired hand and the Kid, the son of Jake’s employer. Kid’s father is stationed in England during world war two so mostly Jake while living on a farm raises Kid.
According to Kid, Jake is very smart! As a matter of fact smarter then his schoolteacher, miss. Henshbaw, who knows things like history, only from books. Jake really knows his history for he fought in those wars personally. The Kid’s sincere regret is that Jake is not listed or mentioned in any history book.
There is a lot to learn about life, especially when you are a young boy growing up. There is this business about woman and romance. First, it’s his single aunt Margaret. Kid learns from Jake, that a woman thinks and is different than a man altogether. But when Jake starts to neglect Kid and spents a lot of time courting Miss. Chinkerby, spending time to get himself all spruced up, Kid starts to wonder about the change. His mother explains that this is what a man does when he is in love. He only has eyes and ears for what is dear to his heart. This Kid can understand for he loved a puppy that much and when it got lost he was sure heart broken. Jake got him another pup and they called him Mr. Churchill two, Saved his life that pup. The day he lost his way in the blizzard. It was Mr. Churchill two, who found him and brought him safely back home. Jake said he surely would have “froze” to death, if the dog hadn’t found him.
Trouble in town? Crocus has its share but folks can always count on Jake to bail them out of trouble. Never uses his fist, just his wits. Jake is the best and Kid ought to know! Who else knows what a boy needs and wants? Take that colt that they saw at an auction. Jake had to outsmart a lot of folks getting him that colt, but he got it just the same. Now Jake didn’t make it into the history books but there was something kid could do for Jake that was just as good, maybe even better! Have the whole town vote for Jake, he could nominate him for Crocus Golden Jubilee Citizen. And he made it! Got his name in the newspapers too! Jake is a hero, like Kid always knew he was.
