City cops alert online lovers to scam

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

Police in Edmonton are warning online lovers to beware of putting money where their heart is.

Fraud detectives say a love scam has been circulating on the Internet in which victims, usually women, have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The fraudsters initiate contact on dating sites and obtain personal information about their victims.

The crooks pose as successful businessmen from the United States, who have run into trouble while traveling in Nigeria or the United Kingdom.

Their cyberspace paramours are persuaded to send money to the men to get them safely back to the U.S.

Police say victims have been defrauded out of about $275,000.

.... besides being slow ... the woman featured in the news is still in communication with the person that scammed her and still has hope it will lead to a more long term committed relationship... the "M" word was mentioned.

Many sites give warnings about scams... this site has warnings, and the ones my friends are on also have scam warnings ... one of the first signs mentioned regards asking for $$$$$ ... so ... is it safe to assume many don't read ??? ... confused

Well the cops were obviously too busy tasering sleeping kids and homeless people to be bothered with dating scams.

Not sure what to say about people getting involved with scammers though. No shortage of warnings from all sorts of sources including the site itself.
I haven't been on a lot since before Christmas, but I have been sent 5 emails from women I would suspect to be scammers. Two of the women even had the same email address. You'd think they'd be a little smarter than to have multiple profiles on here, and not use the same email address. laugh

Too bad, the last one is really good looking. Caucasian girl, but lists herself as Black/African, and lives in Lithuania. I think she's confused.laugh

I do have to wonder about it though. The first thing I wonder about people who get caught in these scams is, are they so desperate that they fall for this? It seems so eh? It just amazes me that people still fall for these scams.

Who was it that said? 'A fool and his money are soon parted.'. I think it was P T Barnum, not sure.

You guys are right, the warnings are all out there.

There is no way I would send any money to someone I have not even met yet. I got scammed by a guy I met in person so now I am greedy and would not depart with my money.

Okay, this is one of thing I have a very hard time wrapping my brain around...what kind of frame of mind would a person need to be in to be sucked in like this - to send money??? I just don't get it. And I really don't get the fact that it continues at a very high rate, despite all of the warnings and publicity...guess it is that tendency to believe that "it will never happen to me, and this is the real thing?"
