Ralf74: I think the media are constantly trying to outdo themselves and have created B grade shows in an attempt to beat rival station ratings by producing shows with thin story lines & pathetic acting in an attempt to come up with the next tv fad. As a society we keep pushing the acceptable boundaries that we can show and although I am a bit partial to smut and bad language, you look at shows like Hey Hey it's Saturday and that was the best entertainment without all of that. It was innocent with a bit of suggestiveness, a family show and offered a variety of entertainment. The hosts and guests were quick witted and the amazing off the cuff remarks were incredible and hilarious.
I remember that although I saw only a couple of episodes from one series that made it to NZ. I think my Brother introduced it to me.
Yet there is the problem: We : Us: have let television get to this level. We let (Generally speaking of course)our children watch dribble on TV. We turn the box on and then tune out. We don't care.
I wouldn't let my Kids watch Bro Town,Southpark, or Shortland Street. Yet as soon as I wasn't around the TV channel changed. the wife had no objection.
My reasons were different for each show.
No I don't think the TV serves it purpose.
I discovered a new show recently. Its an old show now but new for me. Its on the Teenagers channel. Called Skins. Its teenage dribble but with liberal nudity, I got snagged. The humor is simple, That I can understand, and the characters relatable to.
Would i let my Kids watch it? Hell no. They can cause enough strife without watching that and learning other stuff. But i allow myself to watch it as harmless entertainment.
There's double standards for u.
