astoneinariver: i tried boiling the leaves, then letting the steam go up into tube, and i held a cold sponge halfway along the pipe, thinking oil would come out the end, but i,m obviously doing it the wrong way, cause it smelt like a cross between vodka and lavender, got any better ideas?its very frustrating

If you want to boil out the oil... then you have to distill it the same way as alcohol... boil it into a copper tube where it will condense to a liquid. The collected oil and water will naturally separate in the collection container and the oil can be siphoned off.

Steaming the leaves is by boiling water to steam and then driving the steam through the leaves. The steam will collect the oil as it passes through the leaves and the steam is then collected and condensed the same way as in boiling.

You can use chemical extraction but be careful to use the correct amount of each chemical or some chemical residue may remain in the oil.

thouroughbred: i think thats how they do it commercially actually
try searchin google 4 more info
never thought of that, that sounds good though, i,m a bit sceptical of using chemicals,as i,m trying to make a natural safe oil,and i hav tons of tea trees around.i,ll use damien and your methodand mix em up.probly blow my head off laugh

thouroughbred: i actually thought they press them/pulp them then mix with alcohol, as it disolves the oil, then strain it and heat it to evaporate the alcohol leaving the oil.

if that fail, then drink the alcohol

Cold pressing is usually used for extraction from seed kernels... steam or chemical extraction is used for leaves and bark. drinking

Do some research on the oil... find out its boiling point. If you're overcooking it, you might be breaking down the oil at the same time.

But to try and be helpful,
I know that to extract some herbal extract oil from a certain stringy plant they crush and boil the leaves in either Methylated spirits or alcohol (soluable to most oils). Then the meths (Wood alcohol) or alcohol (ethyl alcohol) is heated slowly and boiled off. It can be boiled into a distiller, collected as a liquid and reused to collect more oil.

Hope this helps.

this might be a better url list,

After the leaves have been harvested they are placed on racks in a steam distiller. The oil comes out of the leaves and then floats on top of water in a collection tank. The oil is then filtered and poured into a container.
