I suppose u have all heard about nate miles (nrl, roosters) indescretion in the hallway of a hotel.

Every couple of months it seems one of our elite footballers gets embroiled in a scandal.

What do u think the sociological engineering that makes players do things like this?

The impact it has on their impressionable young fans?

And how come soccer + basketball players refrain from doing things like this?

Thanks in advance to all your replieswave

laugh I love the name Magenta. Poo Gate laugh wave .

Ok I think personally we have a major problem here in Australia especially with the 2 major codes AFL & NRL. It is getting to the stage that not a day goes past that a player in either code has done something .

I tend to feel that it goes back to the old days of the 70s when ....boys will be boys attitude & a lot of clubs & players still hold onto that belief.

Why it hasnt affected the other codes, Maybe with soccer it wasnt really a fulltime sport here till the new competition was established, I remember up till 2001 Adelaide City players were working part time jobs aswell, so maybe that has rubbed of on them & also their professionalism as far as trying to get major contracts in Europe.

Basketball here they seem to be squeeky clean, I dont know if that is due to it probably not getting as much publicity these days, also the club structures are very professional in their attitude so that may help

I don't know B its a hard one. I look at these things and think part of the money they are getting paid is to be role models. The other side of the story is they are perfect targets for the littlest thing they do wrong or don't and get accused of it anyway.dunno dunno dunno

laugh thought the title name would amuse peoplelaugh

I think your onto something there steven. For me i think it is a lack of disciplinary action from the top levels of the codes.

Example of that is the 3 strikes illicit drug system the afl has.

My opinion is, 1st time caught and your club gets notified, 2nd time and your struck of the players list completely.

The hypocrisy is If u get caught doing steriods just once, u get a 2 year suspension.roll eyes

We had that problem in Adelaide, especially when the Crows were the only AFL team there were constant rumours of what they got up to in night clubs, pubs , etc & close to 99% of the time they either werent there or it was made up.

There were the odd exceptions though but I think everyone knows them

Absolutely, it has a lot to do with the money they are earning and the amount of time that they now have on their hands. Back in the 70s and 80s the majority of the players had either full time or part time jobs. I also think that the press has a lot to answer for, they scrutinise everything they do just to sell papers (gotta love sensationalism)

I totally agree SXC on both points.

I think it is a combination of things, the pressure, the media, the culture and the arrogance that comes with stardom. It is easy to say that things were never like this but past players were never scrutinsed like they are now. The media have a major part to play in all of the hype. How many times have you been out with the boys and someone has ended up in a fight or pissing somewhere in public? It is a common event around here. I feel sorry for celebrities and public figures as a whole that their lives are never their own, they are constantly under surveillance by the public, papparazzi and media and although they are paid well, it is hardly compensation when the media decide to make you their star show for the week. They are merciless in getting their headlines and they don't care who they hurt to get them.

they are gladiators- the only difference is that they "kill" differently --- until the rules are changed on contact sports --- the "Kill" mentality for vouyers, players, coaches etc will alawys remain--- to the victor--- the spoils and in this case the vanquished also

Another control of the masses mechanism that doesnt have room in the evolvement of a sophisticated species such as us irresppective of the social economics

Very good points Magenta. I think it sucks especially in the AFL that both they & the players association have turned a blind eye to players who take drugs outside of ben cousins ( that was only because of the police involvement). The players association often says that it unfair to judge a player in his private life if he takes drugs. What will it take some tragic deaths from drugs as has happened with wrestlers from the WWE before they realise that illicit drugs should as you beautifully put be struck off after 2 strikes
