Recent fatal stabbings at the Thomas Embling Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Victoria, Australia has brought into question whether or not those patients who have been charged with murder or other serious crimes such as rape should be allowed day leave escorted or unescorted into the community if after a period of time usually years after their incarceration and intensive psychaitric evaluation they are deemed not to be a threat.australia

I have worked years ago in youth lock up facilities.

I would suggest that part of rehabilitation or reintroduction into the community needs to start with escorted leaves.

No question about that.

Then I'm sure you'll vote for them being escorted in your own neighborhood as I certainly don't want them in mine!

I know that's a knee jerk reaction but unfortunately it's backed up by the stats on re-offending sex offenders. I'm not sure what the stats are for murderers. IMO repeat rapists should be denied oxygen!

I think they should be given their own town with a big fence around it and they can take their chances with their own kind. Then the ones who are fit to be in society can decide what to do with the ones who aren't.

murder or sexual assult...NO FUCKING WAY....other petty crime's yeah...give them a go...i have seen the damage done, regarding sexual assult of an adult or child....these adults and children have to live with this for the rest of their lives, they'll need YEAR'S of therapy to recover...be it murder or sexual assult...these offender's can be great at acting...DON'T FORGET....i've heard too many time's how these people have reoffended...FUCK'EM!!!

Indeed. Who ever thinks about the victims and the families there of. It's really unfair I think that victims of violent crimes, and their families can be forced to live in the same society as the perpetrators. Imagine walking down the street and happening across the person who raped you or murdered one of your family.

wave Does one lead to the other? or do I missunderstand the purpose of day leave. And still, if you happened across someone in the street who had perpetrated such a crime against you I don't think it would make a difference if they were supervised or on day leave or otherwise. dunno

Well I guess I was taking the OP's thread literally as in day leave only. I imagine some of these patients could have been committed for life and perhaps it's too big an issue to give a blanket reply regarding their privileges re leave etc. Some patients may have committed these crimes during psychotic episodes which, with correct medication levels, can be alleviated or completely eradicated.
