Its called window shopping. A lot of guys will look at profiles because of the girls physical appearance in the photo first up. Then if they have half a brain, the will read the profile, then if they have 3/4 of a brain they will understand what is written and then if they have a fully functioning whole brain they will assess from their profile combined with the person they are viewing is looking for and do a mental match up check. If there is a possibility that there might be a chance for a conversation, leading to a date, leading to a relationship etc then they will will be more likely to initiate contact.
However having said that, some guys can be intimidated by pretty girls and like to read their profile and not have the courage to send an email or a flower.
There is on the other hand the sleazebags out there that try the shotgun approach and send the same email to every woman between x age and Y age and hope for the best.
Then of course there is the possibility that someone may have on their profile that they are only here for the forums and anyone sensible enough to read that will not initiate contact.
Hopefully this sheds some light on the male thought patterns as I see it when viewing lots of profiles.
I must admit if I want to check someone out without them knowing it.. I will go offline and then look at them and read their profile carefully. If I do want them to know I have looked I will do it online and then usually follow it up with a flower or an email.
