Why Russia And China Are Intent On Salvaging Syria’s Economy

Another extremely important sector for the Syrian economy is that of hydrocarbons. In 2011 Syria’s oil production stood at 400,000 barrels per day but due to heavy fighting over territorial control with oil fields this has now dropped to a daily production of only 15,000-25,000 barrels,

It’s alarming that many so-called (US-supported) moderate (sic) (anti-government combatants) more often coordinate their actions with” Security Council-designated terrorist groups.

China intends offering Syria humanitarian aid and enhanced military help. On Tuesday, People’s Liberation Army Admiral/high-ranking Defense Ministry official Guan Youfei met with Syrian Defense Minister Fahad Jasssim al-Freij and an unnamed Russian general in Damascus.

Russia accuses US of violating truce accord on Syria

Russia on Saturday accused the United States of violating their bilateral agreement which called for a cease-fire in Syria, saying the U.S.-led air strikes on Syrian military positions was a "bad omen" for the Russian-U.S. accord.

In televised remarks during a visit to Kyrgyzstan, President Vladimir Putin said Moscow was keeping to its obligations under the truce, and the Syrian government was "fully abiding" by the agreement.

But he said that the US seemed to be trying to maintain the rebels' military capability in its conflict with the government, adding that this was a "dangerous path".

violence -- just metres from the presidential palace and city hall -- marred an otherwise peacefully rally Friday in which 50,000 people marched against Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Christian accused of insulting Islam.

The rally turned ugly as night fell and thousands of hardliners clashed with police, setting vehicles ablaze and hurling bottles and rocks at officers, injuring several.

but didn't take long for Widodo to show his colors

About noon, as rain began to fall, President Joko Widodo arrived at the monument, along with Vice-President Jusuf Kalla and Security Minister Wiranto, to join in prayer.

Mr Widodo later addressed the crowd, thanking them for attending an "orderly congregation".

The crowd immediately responded with a chant, demanding Ahok's arrest.

It came as police announced that 10 people were arrested across Jakarta before the protest.

They alleged eight were involved in treasonous activity, with those detained including Rahmawati, who is a younger sister of former president Megawati Sukarnoiputri, and musician-turned-politician Ahmad Dani.

Further details are not yet known.

Authorities called for peace before the demonstration after November's rally descended into violence after dark, leaving hundreds injured, police vehicles burnt and one dead from asthma after tear gas was fired.

The violence also prompted Mr Widodo to cancel his Australian visit and has placed pressure on his leadership.

Ahok, meanwhile, is set to face court for alleged blasphemy over comments he made referring to the Koran in September.

“It is more necessary than ever before for Japan and Australia, as special strategic partners, to play a leading role for regional peace and prosperity, as we both share common values such as freedom, rule of law and democracy,” Abe said.

Incoming U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told the Senate earlier in the week that he was in favor of blocking China’s access to artificial islands it is building in the South China Sea, and that U.S. allies in the region should provide backup in this task.

BOGOR, INDONESIA – Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo met south of Jakarta on Sunday, affirming coordination on maritime security amid tensions over China’s military buildup in disputed waters in the South China Sea.

During a joint news announcement at Bogor Palace, Abe pledged to promote bilateral cooperations in maritime security and the development of Indonesia’s remote islands, including the Natuna Islands on the southern edge of the South China Sea.

The two countries will also strengthen maritime cooperation with regard to the Indonesian Navy’s patrolling of areas in the vicinity of the Natuna Islands.

When a war turns into a nation

HO CHI MINH CITY • Visiting Vietnam recently during its Tet holiday season, the mind went back to the famous military campaign a half-century ago that in many ways signalled a decisive turn in the Vietnam War.

In a series of surprise attacks launched on Jan 30, 1968 called the Tet Offensive, the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese People's Army took on US forces and the American-backed regime in South Vietnam. Americans, who'd been led into believing that they were winning the war against communism, were shocked.

Vietnam's Got a New South China Sea Strategy

In 1287, Gen. Omar Khan of the Yuan Dynasty led a sizeable invasion force, including numerous war junks, against Dai Viet (present day Vietnam). With battle-hardened Mongols forming the vanguard, it seemed as if the campaign would be a walkover for China. But a naval battle the following year proved otherwise. In the estuary of the Bach Dang River near Ha Long Bay, Dai Viet general Tran Hung Dao repeated the feat accomplished by the earlier, celebrated general Ngo Quyen against the Southern Han Chinese invaders, back in the year 938....>

Meanwhile, Moscow on Friday summoned Israel's ambassador to Russia Gary Koren for clarifications over Israeli strikes in Syria the night before.Koren had presented his credentials to Russian President Vladimir Putin, assuming the role only Thursday.Overnight Thursday, Israeli warplanes attacked several targets in Syria, the Israel Defense Forces said, prompting an attempt from the Syrian regime to shoot down the Israeli jets.

Saudi Arabia’s grand vision for the Asia-Pacific region. Determined to extend influence among Muslim-majority countries in Southeast Asia, the kingdom sees Malaysia as having an important role to play in Saudi Arabia’s 41-member Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism (IMAFT).

Some members of Malaysia’s opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, want Muslims convicted of drinking alcohol to receive up to 80 lashes of the rattan cane, and for adulterers to receive up to 100 lashes, echoing the punishment already dispensed in other Muslim countries, including Brunei and some parts of Indonesia. More than 86 percent of Malaysian Muslims support the imposition of Sharia law in their country, according to a 2013 survey.

King Salman and the Malaysian leadership issued a statement condemning Iran’s alleged meddling in foreign countries’ affairs, and Kuala Lumpur generally views Tehran through Riyadh’s lens. The angry response from the Iranian Foreign Ministry to Malaysia’s anti-Iranian statement underscores how Kuala Lumpur’s deepening ties with Riyadh and Tehran will complicate the country’s position in this geopolitical rivalry. It is a delicate balancing act that will probably result in Malaysia having to make difficult decisions about its allies, partners, and friends in the chaotic Middle East.

In December 2015, the creation of an Islamic Military Alliance, consisting of more than 30 member states, was announced by Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s minister of defence.

Pakistan's retired army chief, over whether he will be the supreme commander of the Saudi-led "Islamic military alliance" created by Riyadh in 2015. News of Sharif's appointment has been widely criticized in Pakistan, and the drama underscores the friction in the Saudi-Pakistani relationship.

The Saudi-led Islamic military alliance now has 40 members. Some Saudi commentators have argued that Pakistan should provide a commander for the group because it is the only Muslim country with nuclear weapons. In fact, Pakistan has the fastest growing nuclear arsenal in the world. A leader who has commanded a nuclear strike force would have credentials unlike any other Muslim general.

Saudi Arabia has depended on Pakistani military support for decades. In the 1980s, thousands of Pakistani troops were deployed in the kingdom, but Pakistan refused Saudi requests to send troops to join the Saudi war in Yemen against the Houthi rebels. In 2015, the Pakistani parliament voted unanimously against joining the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen; only the extremists such as Lashkar-e-Taiba supported deploying troops to Yemen.

The Saudis are very hopeful that the new US administration will be a strong opponent of the Iranians. Riyadh wants Washington to reverse Tehran's gains in Iraq and Syria; it wants uncritical American support in Yemen.

Pakistan is much more nervous about US foreign policy.

The Trump administration has been approaching Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan and Egypt through their diplomatic missions in Washington with proposals to form a US-backed defense pact which would share intelligence with Israel and counter Iran's influence in the region, according to media reports.

Veselov pointed out that Trump's initiative is not new. For instance, in early 2015, the Arab League announced its plans to create a joint 40,000-strong response force, with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Sudan, Jordan and other countries contributing troops. It was supposed to be headquartered in Egypt and led by a Saudi general.
The initiative, branded as "Arab NATO," fell through several months later when Saudi Arabia asked to delay the signing of a formal agreement, the analyst explained.

Barazi accused the U.S. and Israel of being backers of the terrorist groups in Syria, and partners in destroying the infrastructure of the country.

Meanwhile, Maher Ihsan, a Syrian political expert, said that the U.S. targeted the airbase, which contains air defense systems that fired at the Israeli warplanes that have infiltrated the Syrian airspace last month and carried out airstrikes on Syrian military positions.

At the time, the Syrian army said it downed one of the Israeli jets, which it said crashed over Israel, a claim the Israelis denied, but didn't hide their resentment nonetheless.

"I think that the whole chemical attack allegations were just a smoke screen for retaliating against the firing on downing of Israeli warplane," he said.

Even Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said at a press conference Thursday that Israel is the only beneficiary of the allegations of the chemical attack, denying that the Syrian army fired toxic gas.

The minister said the army struck an arm depot which belongs to the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, adding that the depot contained chemical materials the terrorists were bringing in from Iraq.

When asked if Russia was somehow involved in the chemical weapons attack, Liberman replied “we don’t know.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said the Syrian military carried out airstrikes in Khan Sheikhoun on April 4, hitting production facilities where terrorists stored chemicals, which were previously used in Iraq and the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has dismissed any accusations that the Syrian Army deployed chemical weapons in Idlib.

Syrian aviation airstrike in Idlib targeted chemical arms lab — Russian Defense Ministry

MOSCOW, April 5. /TASS/. A Syrian aviation airstrike on the eastern outskirts of Khan Sheikhun on Tuesday targeted workshops to produce chemical-laden projectiles, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
"According to Russian airspace monitoring systems, yesterday between 11.30 and 12.30 local time the Syrian aviation carried out an airstrike on the eastern outskirts of Khan Sheikhun, targeting a major ammunition storage facility of terrorists and a cluster of military hardware. The territory of this storage facility housed workshops to produce projectiles stuffed with toxic agents," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

Syria’s Defense Ministry blamed the attack on terrorists and their supporters and rejected any use of toxic agents in Khan Sheikhun. The country’s Foreign Ministry said the accusations against Damascus were "fabricated." Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in an interview with the Al-Mayadeen radio said the government warned about the possibility of a similar attack several weeks ago.

UNITED NATIONS, April 7. /TASS/. Britain said the US action was an appropriate response to the "barbaric chemical weapons attack" launched by the Syrian government

The Russian government condemned the strikes by the US, saying Washington's action would "inflict major damage on US-Russia ties", according to Russian news agencies.

In its first public response to the attack, the Kremlin on Friday issued a strong statement labelling the US move as "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of international law".

Iran, an ally of Assad in the conflict, said it strongly condemned the missile strikes against the Shayrat air base.

"Iran strongly condemns any such unilateral strikes ... such measures will strengthen terrorists in Syria ... and it will complicate the situation in Syria and the region," ISNA news agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi as saying.

The Syrian government says its military "did not and will not" use chemical weapons, denying accusations it was behind an attack on a rebel-held town in Idlib province that sparked widespread international outrage.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was met with a stern scolding by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Wednesday, as the two leaders convened for a full day of meetings in Moscow.

"I will be frank that we have a lot of questions regarding very ambiguous as well as contradictory ideas on a whole plethora of bilateral and international agenda coming from Washington," he said through a translator.

"We also saw some troubling actions regarding the attack on Syria," he added. "We believe it fundamentally important not to let these actions happen again in the future."

But Lavrov nonetheless expressed a desire to work with the U.S., especially on counter-terrorism issues -- something for which the Trump administration has also declared an interest.

"I believe that your visit is quite timely. I believe that it gives us necessary opportunity, as it was discussed by President Trump and President Putin, to have an honest and frank discussion to clear the outlook for the future of our cooperation, first and foremost on the wide anti-terrorist front," Lavrov said.

Behind closed doors, however, Tillerson, Lavrov, and their delegations may now be speaking frankly about critical issues -- not just the conflict in Syria and Assad's future, but also on counter-terrorsm strategy, the threat of North Korea’s nuclear program, and the conflict in Ukraine. Meetings are expected to last all day, and the two leaders will speak again in the evening at a joint press conference.

Russia's FM Lavrov said that Russia views the US strikes in Syria as a violation of law.

"I will be frank that we have a lot of questions regarding very ambiguous as well as contradictory ideas regarding a whole plethora of bilateral and international agenda coming from Washington," Lavrov said.
