consider myself agnostic, and have asked myself the same questions. i think if there is a god that created us, he is most certainly not the evil tyrant that is portrayed in the bible. i have listened to most of the books of the bible on podcast, and don't see how any christians can possible derive their morals from this horrible book. most christians I know have'nt even read the entire thing anyway. i think educating people in critical and logical thinking would be a positive step towards abolishing these backward thinking views. i have a few friends that are christians, so i have nothing against religious people in general, but really hate the garbage that they believe.

This is a question i have asked myself time and time again. At one time in my life i used to beleive that God existed, whent to church, prayed but eventually i started to question alot of things likke why do's God allow humanity...his children to suffer?, i have asked this question time and time again and came up with no answer. I don't beleive in God any more but i still have great respect for those who do and wouldn't dream in interfearing with their beleifs. Anyways whats every bodies take on this?

Sometimes the question is not really about why does God allow suffering, but where the hell was he when I was suffering. It is a huge theological issue of theodicy 'why does a good God let bad things happen'. It is easier to say that God doesnt exist as a way of explaining this suffering, but humanism doesnt really explain the metaphysical issues of life (why were we created etc). We can also answer the question with God's soveriegnty but humanity's freewill in choosing to do the wrong things. But I have found no comfort in either of those positions. When I studied the book of Job, what was apparent is that a satisfactory answer wont resolve how we feel, but the experience of being heard and validated helps the most (for it is only time that finds the suffering coming to an end). It's like knowning that someone who we loved but was sufferring with cancer is finally at peace, having died, but knowning this fact doesnt take away our grief and pain over the loss. Nor does knowing why suffering happens. It is universal experience, we are all touched by it and because we have all been touched by it, some of us can offer comfort and walk with people who are currently suffering, just being there, loving and listening to them (Like Job's friends did before they opened their big mouths and tried to fix his problem. That is when they stopped being of any help to him, as do we). There are many wonderful things to be learned through suffering and it can produce a sweetness in a person that brings hope and strength and comfort to those who are suffering. The Buddhist's take on suffering is very interesting, it is about surrendering to the experience and growing from it. It is rather like a child who has to undergo a lot of operations because of a sickness. As you watch them you see firstly, their fighting against it (like our anger at suffering), then you see their acceptance and finally their surrender to it-painful operation (like accepting our own suffering), then you see a peace about them as they find comfort in the arms of parents who love them. This parent doesnt stop the pain their child is feeling, but somehow it helps when mum kissess the boo boo better. Our friends and families love and comfort helps, especially when they acknowlege our painful experiences.
Im sorry I cant answer the question, but rest assured it is one that has has 1000's of years of debate about.

I hope also that you learn healthy boundaries that protect you from angry people and those who want to take and take from you. As a human you deserve dignity and have the right to decide your actions, your destiny, and the people you want in your life.

Every one of us has a different view some for and some against the existence of the man up above. Why is there such doubt—such confusion—about the existence of God? For thousands of years, people have debated whether God exists. Most conclude that it cannot be proven—one way or the other. It is surmised that the correct answer lies in the area of abstract philosophy and the metaphysical.
Others become agnostics, asserting that they “don’t know” if God exists. Those who do accept God’s existence often do so passively, merely because they were taught it from childhood. Some do not even care. Such people probably cannot be moved from their apathy.

Artie asked does god exist?

From my scepical beginnings I would now say absolutely YES but with a number of qualifications.
1. The word has been so abused for personal and institutional gain that lacks respect.
2. We explain complex phenomena such as personal feeling using commonly understood figures of speech [metaphors].
The mistake is to take it as real [literally]
3. A more use ful word suggested by acclaimed writer Eckhart Tolle is 'inner being'

How do we find the inner being ?
a] Reflect on our capacity to experience beauty and joy [and their necessary opposites.

b] Read 'The Power of now' by ET

The 'inner being' is for each of us to find.No one can do it for us.Its an understanding one builds by hard work. The joy of its discovery is the source our capacity to selflessly love others. Forget the attachment stuff that belongs to preadolescence and is crippling.

God is not responsible for your life, you are... I do believe there is a higher power, but it's not there to help or hinder you...it's always your choice... I believe we are on this earth plain to learn about who we are, sometimes we need to be born with problems as overcoming the crazy seemingly unfair stuff teaches us the most about ourselves......it's not what happens to us, it's how we choose to react to it..... leave God out of it...

Just a thought....kiss

My poor agnostic friend. I would be extremely confused too, if I only listened to "most" of the chapters of the workshop manual of my car, and tried to understand it. In fact, it sounds like you heard all about the wars and bad things(because the Christian Bible is basically a book recording historical events), but missed all the important moral and spiritual issues. Perhaps dozing off a lot while listening. It does help to read the Bible if you are a Christian, but the main point is to be saved . That is to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of GOD (the GOD of Abraham,Isaac and (Jacob) Israel) and that this same Jesus was a part of GOD that became incarnate in the form of a man(human being), lived a perfect life, and suffered and died by crucifiction for the sins of all people; to cleanse them of their sins, or in otherwords, so GOD could forgive them of their sins. So that they may be saved from their sins, and be able to live with HIM and GOD the Father in HEAVEN (paradise) forevermore. The teachings of Jesus, meaning the Christian moral standards, if compared to any other religious system in the world today; or any other system you would like to mention for that matter, is the ONLY TRUE SYSTEM that exists that would bring WORLD PEACE and equality to every living human being in any ERA in history including this one!!! And if you think that the "book" that teaches these sort of morals is "horrible", and to believe it is garbage to have a world full of peace and equality and to be able to live for eternity in paradise. Then I suggest you READ the WHOLE BOOK, without falling asleep,or being on drugs (as someone on this post has suggested you might hallucinate the truth) and being totally sober ! Because I believe, educating people in critcal and logical thinking would be a positive step towards abolishing these backward thinking views of racism, slavery, oppression, greed, megalomania, abominable materialism and every other rotten detestable evil ideas that enter the minds of people! God bless everbody who reads this!

My dear friends. Looking at the question, does God exist. Using the latest scientific knowledge. Since the great discovery of genetics and the breakthroughs of this science to date, they have discovered that ALL people are related , and can be traced back to one set of biological parents for the whole human race. This discovery is called The Eve theory using mitochondrial DNA.To look at information on this do a web search A shrinking date for 'Eve'-Journal of Creation (TJ) . Also there are absolute tons of scientific evidence that have been around for years that disprove all the bullshit of the earth and universe being billions of years old. Professor A.E. Wylder-Smith wrote many books on the subject and put together a very good documentary series on the processes of dating the age of the earth and universe with the top scientists in their fields, proving beyond any doubt that the Earth and the Universe is only a few thousand years old. The documentary series is called ORIGINS: How The World Came to Be. It contains six episodes. One law of science alone, the second LAW of thermodynamics, by itself PROVES beyond any doubt, that the universe as well as all life, cannot come into existence just by itself or by any big bang bullshit THEORY. And life (any living thing or living matter) cannot come into existence just by CHANCE or by ACCIDENT. All and everything that exists has to be MADE, has to be PUT TOGETHER, it cannot come into existence by itself. Please feel free to ask me any questions relevent to the origional thread question and I will answer it if I am able. God bless you all. PS Just please don't ask me to make new paragraphs as I don't know how.peace handshake cheers

The answer to your question is.... NO!!! The thought of there being a god up there does help some ppl get thru their problems.. but science proves that there isnt.

God is just an excuse for ppl to blame their problems on and a thought to help them thru.

Exactly. There is no God. A cultural/Psychological yearning for a higher being has been used and abused for thousands of years. "I am connected to God" is what a lot of believers say. I am connected to Don Corleone, George W. Bush, The Pope Oh and I know Mick Jagger too. Power by association.

There has been a God gene identified, This says it all.

Brother Patric. Let me first ask you a question. Where did you get your misinformation re God gene ? The discovery of the Eve mtDNA was widely announced in the news on TV, newspapers, scientific journals etc. More information can be found on the Eve mtDNA on the web where I mentioned, if you would like look it up. The LAWS of thermodynamics can be found in any comprhensive physics book or also probably on the web. The laws of thermodynamics are proven scientific LAWS and are irrefutable (1+2=3 not 12). You also mentioned in a previous comment about a cultural/psychological yearning for a higher being. Where did you learn this ?, as I have no such yearning and never have. My information is from factual science and factual scientific research and findings. Not theoretical science or theories put forward by people with wonderful or fanciful imagiations, such as Charles Darwin and others like him, whether they be scientists or non scientists. If people wish to believe in Lord of the Rings being a possible factual event somewhere, or any other fantasy such as Darwinian evolution or big bang science fantasy that's up to them. But unfortunately western governments force these ridiculous ideas on people (evolution, big bang, things being millions of years old, and lots of other untrue science) throughout their schooling and constantly through every medium possible (you can't escape it) so they're basically brainwashed all of their lives with this rubbish. Unfortunately people are deprived of the truth and are led to believe that there is no real reason for being and that their existence and life has no real purpose, that we are "just here" and that's it, so some people go around doing whatever they like, with blatant disregard for everybody and everything. Is the world like it is today because people care about what's going on ? Or is it because people just take what they can get ? If there is no reason to care for others(as in some religions, countries, dictatorships, juntas etc where human rights are abused ) the world becomes the bloodbath and sick, sorry and polluted place it is today. Compared to what a beautiful and peaceful and unpolluted place it could be. Am I right on this question ? So if you can afford me a proper response I will respond, if not, I have proved my point.

My poor brother patrickthomas, your so called "God gene" is just an hypothesis, or in otherwords a guess, by an uninformed Dr Dean Hamer to sell his nonesense" fantasy"book to make money for himself by selling lies. Putting it simply Dean Hamer is just another con artist peddling dribble. I quote "showing the poverty of reductionist thinking". And if you patrickthomas base your beliefs on this sort garbage misinformation, then you will always be blind to the truth, and blind others also in the process of peddling your misinformation. Sorry brother, but you're showing your unintelligence big time. May God open your eyes. Amen.
