I think public places are always best. If he lets you decide pick somewhere where you are comfortable and familiar with, don't burden yourself with things that are going on around you. It's a first date and you'll want to make an impression, focus your energies on the conversation you'll have, dress in something that you look attractive and feel confident wearing.

First date differs from first meet thats the thing with internet dating , by the time your doin the first meet you know a fair bit about the person , have chatted maybe cammed , Then comes the next step to actually go & have a face to face now from my experiance this can be very very very different from the whole cyber side of things , where as the person may have been articulate & witty they may be shy & reseved ,,, it happens anyway I digress , the first meet should just be casual if you then like each other, & the person is what they project online to be, then plan the first date well thats what I do seems to be an ok way to work this .
