Do you still need help with buying new RAM for your Computer ?
This thread seems full with blonde insults .

Depending on your current PC hardware , will be
if its cheap just to upgrade the RAM with another stick
or if its going to be cheaper buying a new
cpu , new motherboard and new ram . (Since old ram is costly)

Can you please download a free program called SIW
http://www.gtopala.com/download/siw.exe

Once you have downloaded SIW , you want to run
the program.

Then goto the 'hardware' section on the left hand side
Then goto the 'Motherboard' section

Can you please post down the Manufacturer , model ,
CPU socket and CPU information

Then goto the 'memory' section and post the details
how many memory slots , memory type , memory speed

Now if its a system using DDR1 RAM (DDR266/DDR333/DDR400)
then you could get some new stick of DDR1-400 speed ram
but its going to be expensive , might be a better choice
to get a new CPU/RAM (DDR2-667)/Motherboard.

Just checked Umart.net.au (Local PC store in Brisbane & GC)
they list 1 gig of DDR1-400 for $75 new

Where for $50 you can get 2 gig of DDR2-667 RAM.

So looking at that if you can afford 70 to 90 bucks
and if it is older system that uses DDR1 ram that could
get you out of trouble , its up to you and how much dollars
you have to spend on the computer

Blondeaozchick,

Go onto Google and look for CPUz download.
Run CPUz and it will tell you exactly what type of memory you have, it's speed and size.

Another option is if you right click on "My Computer" on your desktop, it will tell you what type of processor and it's speed is, can you let me know what that is as I can probably work out what RAM you have. I also need to know what brand and model your PC is.

I fix PC's as a sideline. I'm currently doing a Diploma in IT.

All the best handshake

Shit.. should have done this awhile ago... its ok now.. bourbs helped me realise I didnt need to increase my RAM.. I just needed to reduce the amount of programs I had running at all times taking up my precious resources... get this.. I had 127 programs (i think it was) running in the background.. I am now down to 43 at the most so its much much better

so thanks to bourbs for taking the time to get to the real source of the problem cheers grin

You should be able to get 512Mb of virtually any common memory of the last 10 years on ebay for less than $50 (more like $20-30). Once you know your motherboard and what memory you have (hopefully 1 stick of 512Mb). 1Gb total is all you would go to for Windows XP. Helps when running loads of stuff.

(this sort of thing is my business)

blondeaozichick:
150 to 43 programs , WTF
I think you mean process

I only have a few programs running on my server PC
at the current time

Firefox (web Surfing_
DC++ (File sharing tool)
Perfect Disk (Defrag tool)
Miranda IM (Instant Messager that works with Yahoo , MSN and ICQ)
Statbar (information tool)
and Speedfan - Checks/monitors heat of hdds/cpu , speed of fans

I have 29 process's running .

Standard Windows (Not Nlited) can get bloated up with commercial free software and trail ware . Once a year its good to backup all the data and do a CLEAN RE-INSTALL of Windows , also gives you a chance to BACKUP once a year also .

If its still slow May I suggest getting a copy of Hijackthis
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis
and posting your hihackthis log on this thread

Here is a copy of my hijackthis log so you have an example of what it looks like:
