Hi all...I've just taken the plunge and booked a flight to Auckland! I've never travelled alone before so this is a big adventure for me.

I'd appreciate any suggestions of the best places to visit in NZ, places to stay or whatever help or advice might be on offer.

thanks

Hi and welcomewave I lived in Auckland for 12yrs a long time ago, but yes it is a beautiful place, try and get down to the south island as that is spectacular, Auckland is very similar to Brisbane but still, a very beautiful place, have a great time and let us know how you go?wave wave wave

wave Hi Chez

I have never been to NZ, but am hoping to go next year. One of the places I am interested in is a llama farm at Christchurch that also has accommodation. It might interest you too. www.llama.co.nz

I really don't think you could go wrong anywhere in NZ though, it looks so nice. Enjoy your holiday boogie

Bay of Islands - north of Auckland - day trip, very pretty

Beaches - around Auckland, there is Piha and all the western beaches
In Auckland, Mission Bay I guess
If you really love beaches, east coast of the North Island round Gisborne - that's where Whale Rider was filmed.
Heading south - Lake Taupo is pretty.
Tauranga has a nice beach, but can be full of posers and ex-yuppies

Skip to the South Island and hit Nelson and Blenheim for wine-tasting (if you like wine, that is). If you REALLY like wine, stop at Waipara Valley once you've passed Kaikoura (whale watching and seals on the beaches) to get to Christchurch. In Christchurch, you can go hot air ballooning (complete with champagne breakfast) - but you could have done that near Taupo, too - take day-trips to Akaroa (more beaches and whales and dolphins) and you can go to the West Coast, which is absolutely spectacular and a must-see. Mirror lakes, waterfalls, misty mountains, forests, roaring surf, etc. Get a motel in south Greymouth by the beach and go to sleep to the sound of the sea (after a nice spa, of course). Then its Queenstown and Wanaka - tourist resorts with snow - and Fiordland - the Milford Track.

I think that's about the best bits.

Many thanks Ceres...I'll check out all of those places you mentioned.

cheers

The good thing about Kiwi land is that you don't have to travel far to be somewhere else.

I visited Ireland in early 2000. I stepped out of the Paddy Wagon Green bus tour near the village they filmed "Ballykissangel" ... there was the smell of Poplar trees and blackberry bush and gorse. There was the smell and sound of a clear running stream. Apart from the position of the Sun (to my left as I faced West) I could have been in Galatea a farming district in the Bay of Plenty New Zealand. Blackberry and Gorse are noxious weeds in NZ but like the Irish they have thrived and there is still plenty around. They have found that Gorse is quite a good nitrogen fier for soil. Apparenty the native trees will grow through it and then shade it out. so they are not burning it off like they used to.

You will find the North Island has a lot in common with Southern Ireland. But don't miss the South Island if you can afford the trip. It has a lot in common with Scotland. It's Mountains are much higher but it has the same high country a long deep lakes.

The Maoris and the Irish have a lot in common culturally too. I am talking about the ancient culture of the Celts not the modern Christian converted Irish. However Christianity has treated the Maoris in similar ways to the Celts.

It has been 5 years since I made a trip back but I am sure you will enjoy yourself. Take care though. There are gangs in the major urban areas organised loosely along bikie gang lines. Generally they won't give you any problem but if you know where not to go in Dublin on a dark night you will be fine in Aotearoa the Land of the Long White Cloud.

My next trip around Un Zud (How Aussies reckon Kiwis sound when pronouncing "NZ") will be by motorcycle.

Hi I'm not actually moving permanently to NZ, although I'm sure I'll wish I was once I get there. I'm just visiting for 3 weeks. But who knows if I like it I might consider moving if I have enough points. I'll let you know how I get on.

kismat national park, Waikato New Zealand
The able tasman nice but buzy, the whangapeka but it was closed for awhile its good if you want to get away from it all or the national park in the north island, where else can you walk between to live volcano's. The far north for white sand beaches, new plymouth for black and the able tasman area for feld spar beaches. Fishing in taupo and rotorua for rainbow trout and rotorua's famous for it's thermal area's and Maori culture, the natives, Kia Ora.wave
