Our first reaction is from our hormones. Our cerebral cortex came along later and tried to make sense of love. The other things that lead us to love (apart from smell) is clear skin, symmetrical eyes, excellent poise, and the same inter-occular distance as each other.
Having said that and crushed all the romantics.. I think that over the net one call fall into interest, into lust, into friendship, I do believe that love comes later after meeting when all of the above fall into play.
there is love that can be found between a man and a woman, or a woman and a man to satisfy all those equal opportunists.
there is love that can be found between members of the same sex
these two are one in the same kind of love, one that is enhanced with sexual intimacy
there is love that can be found between a parent and a child, and between siblings, and also other family members.
this is a love forged through the closeness of a family unit.
there is a love that can be found between close friends, either of the same or opposite genders.
is it possible that as the internet becomes more and more prevalent in our lives that there is a new form of love developing that doesn't require physical interaction? a new virtual love?. it's still love, but like the varieties above, has it's own place and intensity in our lives
