bubblesron: AYR????
My home town - grew up in Clare, just 20 miles up the river and cyclones were an anual event, sometimes we were lucky enough to get 2, they always meant at least one day off school for us and the spectacualr sight of the brudekin river (About a mile wide) rising at 6 ft an hour. Had to be seen to be believed.
Summer storms always seemed to cause more damage back then than the cyclones, although in 59 we had one split just off the coast and got two within a three day period.
Exciting stuff for primary schoolers.
Experienced a couple at sea in the 60s, now that made one sit up and take notice i can tell you.
Hey Ron,
I grew up mostly in the north-west in the cyclone belt. Been through a few (lost count at about 20). The worst summer we had 6 cyclones (Amy cat 5, Bruce cat 2, Claire cat 3, Dean cat 5, Enid cat 5 and Freda cat 1) in 4 weeks and didn't get a single day off school, bummer!
Worst blow was Vance a few years back. Crossed the coast north of us but we didn't get it too bad. It went straight over the top of my mate's station homestead. The wind was so strong it forced it's way through 3 foot thick stone walls and blew the plaster off the inside of the kitchen wall.
They had two stations next to each other one received about 85% damage the other about 80%. The house, aeroplane hanger and all the sheds except the shearing shed were lost and the other lost the shearing shed, workers accommodation, hanger and three quarters of the roof off the house along with 3 bedrooms. They also lost all of their windmills except 1.
Went up to help them clean up and it was absolutely heartbreaking.
