I have a flukey fishing one too. My dad and i and my brother were out fishing in one of the estuaries off the burdekin river in his tinny. I was so bored, hate fishing! I had this little handline and dad had baited it up for me coz i wasn't touching it and i cast it out. I was sitting there for what felt like eternity getting eaten by sandflies and burnt to a crisp in the sun. I thought i had better reel it in and see if I had any bait left with dad watching on, next thing he sees a fish on my line, it was a spotted cod from memory then tagging along behind it was a sand crab. I have never seen my dad so agile, he was leaping around the boat trying to get the net before the crab let go. He managed to get them both and that was the catch of the day. laugh

Well a couple of years ago.. I went for a weekend at Bribie with the short person. We had NO money, so I took a couple of slices of bread and the rods and went down to the local fishing spot.

Rolled a ball of bread popped it on the hook, cast out, and bang caught a lovely bream.. legal size.. and dinner taken care of..

Had a few times like that.

Was fishing off the jetty one day. A nice warm calm day the temp was kicking around the 38-39 mark, not a breath of wind and the water looked like it had been slicked with oil. There was maybe 20 other people there and I was on my own trying out a new reel. Over the afternoon I landed 8 good sized doggie mackerel in the 3-5 kg range (great fun on light tackle) and had an absolute ball. Then realised I was the only person to land a fish all day.

A Mate and I were on the same jetty at night in winter, the wind was blowing a gale and all you could hear was the sound of brass monkey balls rolling along the jetty.
The fishing was really hot and in the space of about 3 hours we must have caught between 150 and 200 tailor between us ( we took 4 home and used 3 for bait). After getting a couple each we crushed the barb on the hooks and released all except ones too badly damaged. The bite was absolutely hot, for us. There was six other groups there that night who caught a sum total of 2 fish between them.

The best I saw though, was one evening on the 1 mile jetty in Carnarvon. We were out near the head of the jetty and I was chatting to this bloke about his gear. His rod and reel was the top stuff. The sort of gear all dinkum fishos dream of. His rod and reel outfit was worth about $700 (in the late 80's). He had been fishing all day and had caught bugger all.
Then this 10 or 11 year old kid rocks up with a heap of fishing line wrapped around an empty coke bottle, sits down on the jetty a couple of yards down from us, baits his old hook and chucks it out. Within a couple of minutes he hooked, and after a fair fight, lands a 22kg mulloway. He chucks the fish on an old pram (we all used the old steel-craft prams for jetty trollies) and off he goes home.
The look on the face of the guy with the fancy gear was something I think I shall always remember.

going back a month or so i was rostered on weekend crew at tin can bay coast gaurd. it was a quiet weekend with no call outs to speak of, so i went n bought fish n chips from the cafe across the road from base. while i was there i see some metal slug lures on the wall n they were cheap enough at around $2.50 or something so i bought 1. anyway went back to base had lunch, still no call outs or action n was like that 4 the rest of the day. late in the arvy i got my rod out of my car n walked down to the jetty out the front of base n tied on a plastic coated wire trace n hooked on the metal slug. no 4 those not famililar with tin can bay its one of those places that absolutely fired about 30 years ago, but due to commercial fishing has had the arse flogged out of it n now the fishing is very hit n miss so to speak. so i went down not expecting much and after a heap of casting n retrieves thats how it was beginning to look. anyway i thought to myself half a dozen more carsts n i m out of here. not long into the retrieve something hit the lure hard n he wasn't happy at all. he pealed of a bit of line from the drag but i kept the pressure on him the whole time n then he tiered a bit n i started bringing him in. he was a cunning bloody thing to as on the way in he went 4 every bit of structure he could find to trie n bust the line, but managed to stear him clear or all obsticals. anyway landed him n it turned out to be a good sized yellow tailed king fish. u rarely get good hook ups like that in that area so i think it counts as a fluke.
