Well I know that to say all Dutch people are a certain way is painting with a broad brush and is a gross generalization. So i need to apologize. However, I am a pretty social and friendly person, and i can honestly say that I have not had even remotely close to what could be considered a meaningful conversation with anyone Dutch (let alone a Dutch girl). Hahaha!

Its the strangest phenomenon: Dutch people are ridiculously friendly with simple trivial interaction, but then it stops there.

Normally, they don't want to babysit anybody.
I read books, sort of guides for foreigners in NL, as to understand how to deal with the Dutch, body language and all that stuff. For example, what concerns American extremely selfconfidence aka boasting...it's not appreciated here.
You need to have strong self emotional administration. If it's your first time emigrating for real, you'd have the same issues in any country, no matter if it was in Spain (where they say people are nice...which I do not agree).
The Dutch people go along with your futilities very well. If you want to get into their shoes...you gotta be deep and independent. They don't like having 24/7 silly chit chat at home.

The Portuguese, give you nothing emotional. I heard it's a latine problem. Oh yes, they kiss you and hug you...but if you are too deep, you get nothing from the Portuguese, etc. I'm always concerned, thus, I LOVE THE DUTCH!

Firstly, welcome to CS. Secondlt Chris has written it all well about moving to any country. And although you are painting with a wde brush, it is easy to culturise, as I did when I moved to Austria, the Austrians are very stoic and show very little emotion, sense of humour is what gets under their skin and they like humour. I learned this quicly when I went to find my car one morning and my landlady's father had hidden my car.

Find your surrounding people's vulnerable spot, we all have one, pick at it like a scab, and you'll crack it.

From my experience of the Dutch and I have worked with some, they are beilliant at languages, why many global's like the Dutch to work for them and they too enjoy humour.

They have no problems in findind excuses to talk to you. I swear I do wear my hat on my eyes so I don't have to say "hi" at a smile.
It's about finding interests in common. If you want to talk, you gotta make it more tangible.
