Didn't have comics, sweets or TV till I was well over 11 yrs old ...

Fondest memories ... Christmas school concerts at the village hall (in France) ... was exciting especially when it snowed ... after all the wonderful "offerings" from all the different classes and the clowns and general enternainment, every school child would get called up by "father Christmas" and given a really "up-market toy" (like a doll with real acrylic hair!!!!! laugh ) and a bag of Christmas goodies like satsumas, chocolates, nuts etc... Found out later it was all paid for by the local lorry manufacturer Berliet ...

Comics: Bugs bunny, Scrooge Mcduck, those three ducklings and their Dad, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Oh, and Picture Story books - was fascinated at how an entire book was drawn in pictures.

Sweets: Chocolate if I forfeited the Sat matinee movie. Otherwise Penny horribles - Nigger balls ( imagine that!) black toffees, Wicks Giant Bubblegum (could blow a bubble as big as ones head! and if it popped you got your face and hair covered in gum!)

Movies: Anything showing on a Sat afternoon where the bikers hung out in their leathers and old drop-handle oil spewing British bikes (before the days of Jap bikes) - the In-Crowd. Always sat upstairs otherwise you got gum or cigarette butts dropped on you.

Radio: (No TV in SA till late `70`s) The Chappie Chipmunk phone-in show - you could win a box of gum. Pick-a-box, thriller shite Sci-Fi serials, and "Guilty or Not Guilty - Whats your verdict?"

Comics.......Beano,Dandy,Mandy,Twinkle

Sweets.......Bubbly's, Gob stoppers, Chix(bubble gum), Walkers carmels, Spangles, Sherbert dip.

Films.......Cinderella, Snow white, Lassie, Sound of music.

T.v.....Wooden tops, Andy Pandy, Hectors house

Radio.....Radio one on a sunday they gave the chart countdown to number one, Luxemburg, used to bring the small transistor to bed and listen to the latest hits.

One of my fondest memories was a christmas time when I got a dolls house (my father built it) it was fully furnished but no people and my mother made me people out of pipe cleaners and wool, my friend and me spent hours playing with it and my father often told me he was delighted I got so much enjoyment out of it cos he,d never built anything like that before.........when I look back it was a rickety old thing but when I was a kid, it was like a mansion to meday dream smile

Ah yes .... we also got those little bottles of milk! Yughhhh how I hated them .... all warm and made your mouth slimy! We also got fruit ... a banana or an apple. Someone in authority must have had an idea about "keeping the kids healthy" or something?

A pity that is not done now-a-days when kids actually realy need something nutritious .... in those olden days most kids were quite a healthy lot ... we had no money for sweets or junk food (I think we spent it on cigarettes!)smoking batting eyelashes

My childhood was "placed" in the "Wicki Slime and paper" time ...
and I also was member of the "Milkbottle at school" - league.
( I remember that these boxes had a very good aerodynamic, when smashing it towards the blackboard ...)
Comics: these ducks and the mouse (cant remember the name ...), than Asterix, M.A.D.
Sweets: icecream - Paper, and Twinny (hated it because had to parting, share it with my brother), sweet foam with a chocloate hull called "Schwedenbomben" (funny name ... ) and the chewing gums from dispensers at the bus station
TV: the dolphin "flipper" , Bonanza (to learn how U.S. farmers live), Biene Maya (the story of bees, ants and a fly with sunglasses cool ...)... etc.
Radio: Top ten of Pop music ( called Hitparade ) every sunday ...

And the result of that horrible childhood-lifestyle-things you will see at my profile-picture ...

Statler Brothers
Flowers on the Wall

I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're givin' me is conscience I guess
If I was walkin' in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none
While you 'n' your friends are worried about me I'm havin' lots of fun

Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do

Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine
You can always find me here, I'm havin' quite a time

Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do

It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete

Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire till dawn with a deck of fifty-one
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do

Don't tell me I've nothin' to do

rolling on the floor laughing
