The Aristotle ideal of friendship is personal and mutual, and the very highest friendships are exclusive according to him. On the other hand, philosopher Immanuel Kant held the view that a person could offer friendship to all other people equally

Now that's interesting.....

But are "social friends" who may not ever be that close to you, but still help you pass the empty hours pleasantly, still considered friends??

Are "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" friends who help you get things done in life, still considered friends??

Are people who don't know you that well but nevertheless express good will towards you, still considered friends??

yes.. there are lots of different types of friends

friends that you chat to, friends yuo go for coffee with, friends you confide in (those are few) and friends you know it's ok to call at 3 in the morning for a cry on their shoulders.

I have few real friends. but those I love dearly, they're part of me, even if I don't see some of them for a long time. Friendships take time to build I suppose, I have had the same set of friends for ages plus a couple of not so recent.

Friends are rare and precious. They live with you for a long time, understand you, bear with you, share common wishes and are there for you/as you're there for them for without any self-interest. They're one of the best things in life. They are actually sort of partners...

Many acquaintances have a friendly character and disposition. But they're not part of your life-when you'll actually need to share strong sentiments.

I have at least two friends-and am very happy for it.

Friendship...?.... I have found that when people are "open" and share their feelings .. that is how real friendship develops. Doesn`t mind if you dont agree, as long as each is open about their feelings. Maybe that is the reason behind why a lot of good friendships develop from people who actually sort of "argued" or "fought" or "disagreed" in the beginning?....... because they were open with their feelings? The friendship never got off to a "well behaved" beginning........? (a sort of mask-wearing?)

Many years ago, during the warD'oh! lots of women had affairs whilst their menfolk were away fighting the Hun. These men were introduced to the woman,s children, and forever after referred to as uncles. My ex mother in law (the first oneD'oh! ) didn,t find out til she was well into adulthood that Uncle Tom was in fact her dad, very sad. (Where the f..k is he going with this I hear you all mumble.Stay with me). These days such men are referred to (at least in my experience) as "friends".
So when is a friend somebody you have only social contact with ?

Changing the subject a little (Wedward gave me the latitude to do that in his thread title) Enzo Ferrari, when he sadly lost his son Dino later said " I believe that the only true love is between a father and his son. What a man feels for a woman is merely desire".dancing banana dancing banana dancing banana
