True, Lionheart, very true! But we got a humungous problem here with snails and slugs .... as it gets warm they cover everything and eat all the budding new leaves and blossoms. Okay, they are food for the Hedgehogs, but the Hedgies only eat what they can find on the ground...... and the snails/slugs eat everything above ground level. I found out they absolutely go crazy over beer ..... so thought I`d lay in a few Free Pubs for them .. and they love it! Unrestrained, they crawl all over everything ... even deckchairs and out-door tables leaving their slime trails ...... The birds dont want to eat them - So what is their normal natural predator? Is the balance somehow upset here? ..... Even though no poisons are used?

Cut them in half.Many Snails are Carnivorous and they will eat other Snails,especially if the are dead.
Also the Hedgehogs will then be able to get at them,since the Snails would be on the Ground.

Birds will get the ones not on the ground. Especially thrushes, such as the Song Thrush. SO they have plenty of predators. Why do you think they have shells!

Rodents that cause damage as mainly rats which have been introduced by man. Accidentally most of the time. Very often they multiply and increase because they do not have natural predators. As is the case here in Malta, because hunters have killed off all the Kestrels and Barn Owls that prey on rats. If man did not interfere with nature, there would be equilibrium.

Lets kill off all of Mankind and restore the Natural Equilibrium of Nature again

Hunting is very very strictly controlled here ..... Never ever would a bird or any other animal be indiscrimately killed.... So we obviously still got all the natural bird life .... just nothing, besides the Hedgehogs, who eat snails and slugs!

Anyway, never to worry .... I discussed this with an elderly lady today, and she informed me that the earth at my house had not been turned over for many years ... hence the phenomenal amount of slugs and snails ... I only have to spade up the entire garden to unearth the young snails and slugs for Hedgie to nibble on. Well I have already done most of this .... only a few thousand more spadefulls to go! .. And to get rid of all the Ivy groundcover. And that the Comfrey plants I have planted (about 30 so far) will help to eradicate the remaining slugs and snails, but still provide dinner enough for Hedgie and his mates.

I do try and work with nature .... with a few of my own entrepreneurial ideas thrown in .... So the 2 Free Beer pubs for snails and slugs will be a permanent feature ... especially in the region of my Hemp plants.

Nah, Cuspo .... When I`m in a good mood I give them to my grand-daughter and she has snail races - the winner gets to go to the neighbor, and the losers have to go play on the main road with the cars.

Yup ... you only got to live in CH, wait all winter long to grow something ... and then have these Slugs come along and devour the whole lot in one night! ... Sort of reminds me of being back in Africa! Okay, so the slugs havent got AK47`s ... but they still eating what I planted for myself!
