Nah, Cuspo .... When I`m in a good mood I give them to my grand-daughter and she has snail races - the winner gets to go to the neighbor, and the losers have to go play on the main road with the cars.
---- try this smoky mix coffee grinds and salt together sprinkle around plants slugs and snails will not crossand it works they will go and find another more frienly garden

I`d need a few tons of eggs for that! but turning the soil over and getting rid of the dense ground cover of ivy has helped .... not that many around any more this year! .... Also, Hedgie had babies so maybe all those extra little mouths eating away has dwindled the supply? for the escapee slugs there is always the beer pubs - only 2 situated in the choicest area ....

Cant add salt to the soil! Coffee grounds work well .... oh maybe thats why I dont have the huge problem this year I had last year? ....(plus the Hedgie babies) Another good reason to not give up drinking coffee! Coffee grounds work well with ant problems I`ve noticed, and the plants seem to like it too.

I know that Comfrey forms a good barrier against the slugs, they just hate the prickly leaves - but I moved the vege garden this year and my barrier had to be replanted, so is too spaced out to be effective yet.

How could anybody on this forum with a heart, ever contemplate doing harm to a lovable creature like a slug or a snail? Our childhood friends....those snails who have filled our younger days with pleasure. Those creatures with whom we shared so many happy hours.

As somebody said. It is all sadism. It is this mistaken idea that humans have, that they are superior beings and can weild out death to whom they please.

Just a little thought for those who think that they are superior to animals.....just remember that you have ONE life, just like that litle defenceless animal that you are about to kill.

Wonder if hedghogs think they are superior beings. We all live in a world of kill or be killed. We are all happy to eat nicely packaged animals, why do we get so squeamish about snails. I hate the little bstds, tho I don,t kill em. Mind that,s cos I got no garden.cool

i love all animals, and all of what nature has. but i also love to eat. So?

for me, it is not cruelty to kill when you have a reason to do this: for example to feed or protect yourself. It is natures way.

But then again, there are all these details now about the morality of killing rodents that destroy our crops or snails that mess with our gardens. For me the thing is simple: If it invades my personal space (home) or messes with my hygiene and food, its dead or thrown out, depending. In exactly the same manner i WOULD be dead if i invaded a lion's or bear's personal space or if i messed around the food of a tiger. It is nature's way!

Lemme ask you this Antcus: What do you do when your girlfriend starts screaming about that huge brown cockroach in the middle of the night? Do you squash it or talk to it trying to persuade it to at least go unnoticed around the house?

Right now we have a May-Beetle Plague in some parts of Switzerland,so bad they eat every green thing in sight.
Trees Grassland everything.
Asking them nicely to cease and desist did not help at all.
So its collecting them and make some nice Fertilizer.Might reduce the number sufficiently for their natural enemies can take care of them.
Next year might even be worse.
In addition the Grubs of the Beetles are destroying the Crops by eating the Roots.
So should we just let them eat or what?D'oh! grin cool

Exactly my sentiments Elley! ... I even went out and bought two very nice "Slug Pubs" specially for them ...... Free Beer, they can drink as much as they like - I think that is a very kind thing I did, huh?
They even more crazy over beer than my son! .. or about even anyway! Now, I got a rather large garden, so the problem I was confronted with was Where to position the two pubs (only two cause they sold out so quick .. if I`d a known how much slugs like beer I would have bought 30 - but then I`d have to buy a crate of beer a month for the slugs, which means my son would have to donate one of his 4 ..... ) Anyway, I put the two Slug Pubs right in the middle of my hemp patch ... and you know what?... the slugs prefer beer to hemp ... flippin little alcoholics .... they deserve whatever happens to them! Wonder if Hedgie will like beer marinated slugs?

Yup - but I am further up the food chain than your average slug..it takes several hundred thousand slug lives to keep me going over a period of decades!

Ah ha! Gotcha Antcus! Now, I know you are being facetious here - am I right? You who drive a bloody great half-track war machine around for fun - caring for the well-being of slugs and snails!!! rolling on the floor laughing

Well now, with all the advice I got here about not killing them wastefully, that they should be eaten by predators .... I entice them into my Slug Pubs where they get themselves marinated in beer, and then I grill them for starters for any guests who pop in ........ a squeeze of lemon juice and a dash of garlic salt does wonders ..... So now my guests are the predators .... cause the birds wont eat them.
