Oh, and "pessimistic type" people give me a headache...they somehow manage to "make me feel down"...(just for a few minutes sticking out tongue rolling on the floor laughing )...and all I want is to shake them hard and ask if they've got ANYTHING!! good going on in their lives..(obviously this doesn't apply when there's a tragedy/health/breakout problems and similar matters...that's totally different and I'm always helpful)..only mean the ones who're brugging about "negative/unfortunate/deppresing" stuff day and nights...Life is Great! and can be even better if one chooses to believe in that peace Super Great Fri! and weekend! to ALL of you!! lips bouquet of flowers

Which is preferable in life?There is something to be said for both outlooks;

- In an evolutionary sense, it has been better to be a pessimist, since they are more likely to see problems arising, and able to avoid them. (Optimists assume everything will go well, and are less likely to see problems on the horizon.)

- Optimists seem to be more accepted and embraced by our society nowadays. Also, the mind actually works in the way that if you think things will go well, they more often do (for example visualization). And do you think you are born with either one or the other outlook? If so, do you believe this can be changed, or will you always remain the same at your very core? Can a person be a combination of both?

I opt to be optimistic and see the good in the bad.Can someone be both ? Sure although life is good it can get the better of you at times.I have my own little formula to build myself up and stay optimistic. It's easier to bitch and moan and go with the flow than doing something about it.All my life I tried to chose the path right 4 me although many times I had to swim against the stream.CARPE DIEM.< SEIZE THE DAY>wave

Thank you for all your interesting posts - food for thought, indeed.

Nothing is black and white in life, and of course your outlook on life is shaped by your upbringing, background and experiences. Pesonally I'm also a combination - sometimes a bit pessimistic, but mostly optimistic (I come from a land of "stoic realists", who usually prefer to be neither too optimistic nor too pessimistic).

Also, I have found this to be viewed differently in different cultures; someone perceived as very optimistic in Sweden can be called a negative pessimist in the US...

dunno

We are all capable of change.

It requires a lot of patience and good feedback from an external observer and also, if you are very lucky, the ability to perceive and understand your actions/reactions.

We all know the glass can be perceived as either half empty or half fully - but even though we know that it's hard to change your attitude to that glass......if you feel depressed that that glass was full only a few minutes before and you can't afford another pint and you really want one then being aware that it is still half full isn't going to cheer you up........UNLESS

You consciously think and feel grateful that you could afford at least that one pint and that you are NOT going to get drunk and that you'll probably live long enough to afford another one in the not too distant future and that there are other things you can do now that may well be equally enjoyable etc.

We have to take a step back when we are 'negged out' by anything and turn it to our advantage.

Also, it's logical that people who smile all the time and are pleasant to everybody are NOT always happy....... but that determination to present a happy, confident and positive outlook results in people being nice to them more of the time - so it makes sense to at least APPEAR to be an optimist even if you feel all like shit stirred up inside!

'Smile and the whole world smiles with you' they say..........

Ok - if I'm pissed off then constantly smiling people really irritate me, but you should practice what I preach and NOT what I do!

It seems to me that Optimism vs. Pessimism is another example of black/white Thinking.
If one were on the Titanic and would consider 'the ship won't sink' according optimistic attitude I bet he/she had rather no chance to escape. Another one would have presumed 'the ship will sink'- would he/she show any pessimistic attitude? I don't think so. It's simply about being realistic. I think the later one would have got into action and had a much better chance to survive.

I think the goal is to become a realist and stay true to oneself.2 thumbs up
