Feelings change. So if "love" is based on feelings, then its not going to last very long, as you say.
That reminds me of those "Halleluja Happy Clappy" type churches where everyone gets revved up and seem to go on insane highs - depending on how charismatic the leader is? .... And when they come down from their high they hit rock bottom.......and need another adrenalin rush to get the "feeling" again!
So, initially, there is attraction ... based on the age old method of "mate seeking". Then I should think that is where Commitment comes into the picture? And depending on ones character, should ones mate meet with mis-fortune (as in some disease, disfiguring accident, loss of fortune, etc) ones commitment "keeps the home-fires burning"?
Unfortunately, we now not only are consumers of goods, we are also consumers of other peoples emotions, and are inclined to discard them as readily as an old pair of shoes......
