I am going to Turkey in September; I shall return (hopefully) and see if visiting the country for the first time since 1972 affects my opinion......... at present I am wavering on the fence - and by pure geographical definition only a very small part of Turkey is in Europe.

Strange point - I needed cancellation insurance for my cruise......... and, for insurance purposes, both Turkey AND Egypt are in Europe!

Most insurance companies, for holiday insurance, treat all countries bordering the mediterranean sea as being part of Europe!

Then you have global cover minus 'the evil satanic snake of the USA and it's baby cousin Canookland' -

finally you have total global cover which includes both the USA and Zimbabwee!

grin

It is important that basic values are shared by the members of the union and that the members respect each other. Like in any association, really.

Turkey still is discussing within their country if they really are interested.

More interesting is what is going on in Italy right now. What is going on, and is this an acceptable behaviour for a union member? I’d stay tuned for more interesting turns in that country.

I'm a bit like Gangel - don't favour, don't oppose....

What are the arguements for and against, anyway?

Do they go something like:

For - population of Europe is plummeting and could use a boost from the Middle East. After all, who will be paying for our pensions in 20 years time??

Against - on-going human rights violations, Kurds, etc....?

I want to visit to Constantinople, actually..... used to pop over to Halicarnasus when we still had the house on Kos..... best goddam food in the world.....

I think I might understand what you are talking about - how Italy is treating some fellow EU citizens that happen to be of Romany stock; I saw a shocking photograph in the paper yesterday of two little gypsy girls lying on a beach covered by towels. People were happily chatting on beachtowels enjoying the sunshine sitting on the beach within yards/metres of these two little girls.

So what?

The two little girls (aged 11 and 12 I think) had just been dragged from the sea - DEAD!

They had been sent to the beach by their parents to beg, then decided to dash into the sea, got 'walloped' by a large wave and drowned......

Their corpses lay ignored on the beach for an hour as if they weren't there until their bodies were removed.

conversing crying

Actually, I am more concerned by the full immunity decision for the government during the sitting period. Since some high up people there are facing corruption charges. What signals does that send to common folks?

The nationalist thing going on there seems to be a common wind in many parts of Europe now, and is generally disturbing for me, lacking such feelings. Same old, same old, blame the foreigners for the bad economy.

sigh

Ok - now I understand what was on your mind; I never seem to learn that assuming anything makes an "ass out of 'u' and me"!

I remember about a year ago that Italy was bleating about getting out of the eurozone as they were nolonger able to devalue the currency at will every time their exports needed a boost.

I really don't know about the corruption side of things; it's amazing that a well-recognised crook like Berlusconi has got back into power - maybe he at least provides a little continuity and what might pass for stability as a result. We have corrupt politicians everywhere; it's just that some are a little better at hiding their illicit earnings than others.

Oh well, the thread's about Turkey and I've stated before, in other threads, that European countries first united together in a common cause to withstand and eventually defeat the ottoman Empire.

The EU has evolved and has shrunk in name from the EEC to the EC and then the EU - once the name changes to just 'The Union' (U for short) we can gradually take over the world.

We can then accept Turkey and its nice neigbours of Iran, Iraq and Syria into the Union too!

Anybody who failed to state to say that they were a 'Unionist' would then be considered anti all good things and a traitor to the Union; we shall have a trade agreement with the new Russian Empire where 'U' slaves/criminals/politically incorrect people were exchanged for natural gas and other goodies..... right?

There is a difference. Turkey has been working close to the European Union and what was before this since at least 45 years. They ARE part of Europe, if this would have any importance. They HAVE agreements with EC.

But there are many issues that seem hard to overcome for Turkey, and naming those other nations: they will have an even worse nightmare adjusting to current “minimum” rules and standards.

I honestly see a further growth of the trade union EU as problematic in economical terms, where we take room, we take from someone else.

Many non-European countries have agreeements with the EU (nolonger the EC, by the way).

Turkey is a special case and applied to join at the same time as Greece -Greece itself had been a rather non-democratic poor country which many 'core' European countries regretted for many years to have allowed into the 'Common Market'.

However, you cannot argue that Turkey is actually in Europe - only a tiny percentage of Turkey is geographically in Europe....... that's why the Bospheros (I probably didn't spell it correctly) is known to divide Europe from Asia - and even Istanbul is geographically half in Europe and half in Asia.

I'm not saying that Turkey shouldn't join the EU - what I AM saying is that the EU really needs to redefine what it is and what it wants to acheive on the world stage for the intergration of Turkey to be both acceptable and successful...............
