About me:

The Intro Line came from a business card I made twenty years ago to give princesses I met. I figured it might be unpretentious enough that they might remember me.

I've had mixed results with the remembering. Certainly, a lot of people remember me as Bear. Only a few remember me as a princeling, mediocre or not, a few more remember me as a mediocre poet, but many think I'm a better-than-mediocre dancer.

I thought I had made up the word "princeling", but when I searched for the word recently, I found a few thousand results for "princeling", and when I looked in my old dictionary, there it was, so I must have read it somewhere, sometime. And when I searched for "mediocre" and "princeling" together, I found a score of results, but the only ones showing it as a phrase pointed to me, so I figure it is a unique descriptor. That's me: the mediocre princeling.

I figure I'm still a princeling, because I'm still learning how to be a prince. I've had a lot of years to practice, and I think I have some parts down pretty well, but I'm obviously not a First Class prince, or some princess would have long ago snapped me up and hidden me away in her chambers.

My writing is a tool to help myself become a better prince. My stories and poems commemorate my experiences, observations, and feelings, and whatever insights I may glean from them. I reread them from time to time to see if my viewpoint's changed, and to see how I'm doing. I think I've gotten rid of most of my worst traits.

I decided one time that the beautiful princesses were not beating a path to my door, out here in the woods, so I was gonna have to go find em. I explored various ruses, and finally settled on dancing: even if they might not want to be My princess, we could still have fun dancing. And checking the various venues, it seemed like country music was more my style, so I learned how to two-step and waltz and such, and in the twenty years since, I've become at least mediocre in that limited niche.

I'm looking for:

I didn't get a strong religious upbringing, but I did pick up the Golden Rule, and that seems to match up with most of my value system, so I can generally say I abide by it. I remember memorizing the Ten Commandments, too, but couldn't quote them now. However, as much of the Ten Commandments seems to be justifiable by the Golden Rule, I at least loosely abide by them, too.

About fifteen years ago, when I was trying to figure out why I was being so unhappy in one of my relationships, I was stunned to discover that I expected my honey to be a Good Scout! When I was a kid, nearly everyone, boy or girl, became some kind of a Scout, and they all learned the Scout Law:

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Of course, if I'm gonna expect my honey to be a Good Scout, the Golden Rule implies that I've gotta be a Good Scout for them, too, and I think I am. But, even with all the practice time I've had, I still have some trouble with being obedient and reverent, so I'll have to cut my honey a little slack on those two.

So, while I'm looking for my permanent honey, I mainly look for those two things: she ought to live by the Golden Rule, and she ought to be a Good Scout. She needn't be Perfect, but she ought to be trying, as I am.
