About me and who I'm looking for

About me:

I am an astrophysicist at the University of Hawaii. Extragalactic research. Whether Pluto is a planet or not is not a question that keeps me up at night. I run. Marathons, trails, ultras. It has become a bit of an obsession. I like to push my limits, in more than one sense. I make a poor couch potato.

Other things I enjoy: Any activity with my kids. Great food. Great sex. My literature and musical tastes are probably not mainstream. Then again, neither are my political views. I hardly ever watch TV. Books that moved me (I cry easily): Darkness at Noon, Der Steppenwolf, Into the Wild, In Cold Blood.

I believe in communication, in a non-trivial sense. Intellectual, emotional, physical communication. As well as in independence, balance, trust, openness, and honesty - with myself as well as with others.

I'm looking for:

Ideally, the person I would like to meet would be a bit like I view myself: vulnerable, but not afraid; curious, but not inquisitive; vocal as well as articulate; seeking challenges, not fights. An intellectual in the good sense of the word. Affectionate and, at times, argumentative. Somebody who can tell sex from making love without finding the former dirty or the latter silly. An outdoors person of the quiet and observant kind. Somebody who understands the difference between love and friendship, and that the latter may in fact be harder to find (mystified?). A person who is serious and sincere, but also funny and silly (I have a slightly weird sense of humour.) Somebody who is willing and able to connect with another human being at a fundamental level, by dropping the armor that we all carry around with us to protect ourselves. Completely. Easy-going but certainly not shallow. A communicator, with and without words.

Ideally, the person I would like to meet would be very different from me in other respects. Goth punk, professional pianist, or somebody who feels strongly about Pluto. I don't know. It is not total symbiosis that I seek.

Having said this there are a few unmistakable signs of incompatibility. Such as your description of yourself containing any of the following: "love to laugh", "live life to the fullest", or "must love cats/dogs/hamsters". You get the idea...

I have no strong preferences as far as physical attributes are concerned but find myself more easily attracted to athletic types and, to use a cliche, "natural" beauty (makeup is a fairly serious turnoff). I am currently based in Hawaii, but for the right person I will move anywhere.
